Upper Primary Update

It’s been a great start to the year for the Upper Primary Team! Students have done a wonderful job settling into their new classrooms, with their new teacher and peers.

We began our year with the “Bright Beginnings” program where students had the opportunity to revisit our school values and expectations. This included on how we show respect to each other and ourselves, how to be safe and what makes a successful learner.

We soon moved onto our curricular planning where students explored a variety of literacy and numeracy activities. For Maths, we explicitly focused on shapes, prepositions, place value, days of the week and calendars. For English, we focused on phonics, making predictions, retelling key events in stories as well as building word ‘families’ such as “at” and “in”.

For these lessons, we incorporated student's AAC devices, sensory tubs and hands-on materials to further capture their understanding.

This year, we have reintroduced the Geography Unit to our students where they are currently learning about the special places and people in their lives. They’ve had a lot of fun with this unit so far!

Lastly, students had a fantastic time during the Harmony Day celebration on the 20th of March. We all came together to perform dances and songs to our families and staff. Every student did a wonderful job showing the Hamlyn View’s values! We would like to give a big ‘thank you’ to everyone in attendance and to our Performing Arts teacher, Annie Malesic for organising the performance!
