A Snapshot of Learning by Grade 6

Last week, the Year 6 students headed to Camp Coolamatong near Lakes Entrance for a 4 day, 3 night camp. Bright and early on Tuesday the 14th of March the students entered our school enthusiastic and ready for an unknown adventure!
After a three hour long bus ride, with a small snack stop over in Traralgon, we finally arrived to a lively welcome from our camp instructors! After our welcome, the happy campers indulged in a range of adventurous and wet and wild activities. One of the favourites across the board was tubing, but… raft building encouraged their teamwork and communication. Aunty Cass was our guide on the Indigenous Walk which allowed our students to get more in touch with the traditions and costumes of Australia’s First Nations people. Many students stood up for the first time on a paddle board and found themselves partaking in paddling based games. There was a soft breeze during our Sailing experience, creating a relaxing and calming experience for all on board, with many attempting to touch the water as they sailed along.
Our third day of camp involved a scenic boat ride across to Raymond Island, there was the opportunity for our students to soak in the sea breeze. Some even drove the boat for a short period of time! Once arriving, we spotted many of the local Koala’s, high above in the treetops, eating Eucalyptus leaves. The other activities for the day included abseiling and mountain bike riding through the bush.
Each night was filled with Leadership based activities where students worked together in teams to complete challenges. On our night walk, we discussed real life experiences involving leadership. We were lucky enough to experience a stunning sight. Due to the water conditions there was a glistering glow from the water caused by Bioluminescence, the children were in awe every time we skipped stones and touched the water!
Overall, our camp was a great hit with many commenting:
“IT WAS THE BEST CAMP EVER!”
Our caring and dedicated Grade 6 teachers made sure that students were safe and enjoyed their time at camp. Our wonderful Grade 6 teachers this year are Sarah Barbanti (Grade 6 Level Leader), Sharni Spriggs, Carly Barca and Beth Corrigan.
