Curriculum News

Welcome to Semester Two

Where has the year gone?

It is already the beginning of Semester Two. I hope that you all had the opportunity to spend some quality time together and also to have a well -earned rest. Hopefully we have all had the opportunity to get well and put the second term colds behind us.

We are in the middle of our Learning Conferences which is a time for us to re-look at goals and to have face-to-face conversations about how we can work together to continue to provide support for your daughter/s in order to ensure that each one reaches their full potential.

It is also a great opportunity to get to know each other a little better. Please keep in contact with your daughter’s teachers during the term and if you have a query about anything in any class; please make contact with the teacher directly.  If the issue relates to curriculum, the actual class teacher is the first point of call. Often, email is the most efficient way to make contact, as we are in class during the day and it is difficult to return a phone call. If you require further clarification about an issue or have a further question, please make contact with the relevant Head of Department. If you wish further clarification, please make direct contact with me.  It is often best to ask a question early; as this can alleviate concerns quickly.

A Term of Engagement and Challenge

Our Year 6 students are working in an intensive STEM programme with Engineering and Science students from the University and have been given the following challenge:

Congratulations chemists, your team has been selected by Space X to develop a fuel to power their new rocket engine. The fuel will be used to launch an interplanetary shuttle to Mars carrying important supplies for the colonists on the surface. You will need to carry out a number of experiments to develop a fuel that is capable of launching the shuttle. As is the case with any scientific experiment or investigation, it is very important to keep a record of all of the steps, decisions and observations you make during the development of your rocket fuel.  Space X will not agree to trial your fuel unless your records are accurate and up to date. Good luck!

The results: absolute engagement.
