Building Confidence in Reading and Listening

Informal Reading Sessions for Student Skills Development

As part of a focus on improving reading skills, five students in Years 5 and 6 have been coming to school before the first bell on a Monday and Friday morning to read to the Foundation and Grade 1 students.

During this visit the students select a book to read to small groups of junior school children as they arrive to begin their school day.

The aim is for the senior students to develop skills in public reading. It's a time for them to work on their fluency, their ability to ask prompting questions to the junior students, and  then take time to answer questions.

The Foundation and Grade 1 students benefit from engaging with the older students, listening to them read, as well as supporting their comprehension skills.

This weekly activity is proving to be a wonderful opportunity for every child to build confidence and develop relationships.
