Positive Education

Captain of Positive Education - Victoria H

Last Tuesday our school held its Twilight Carnival. This is a great event where students, teachers and families can get together to eat and do some sport. So many students had so much fun, Thanks to Ms Pumpa and the sports captains for organizing the great event. The Twilight Carnival was a good chance to see people using a variety of character strengths.  I spoke to people and they told me that they saw character strength such as teamwork, perseverance, hope and zest.

"Teamwork was shown best in the three legged race. Both competitors had to work really well together to make sure they reached the end of the line and didn’t trip over each other. If one person tried going too fast, they would both fall".

"Perseverance was shown when people who fell down, got back up and kept running".

"Zest was shown by all the people having a go, having fun, being themselves and talking to each other".

"Hope was shown by all the participants who were hoping to win. It was also good to hear that people who didn’t win still had fun."

"Ms Pumpa and the sports captains used the character strength leadership in organizing the event".

Wellbeing at Mullum Primary School - Emily Murcott (Head of Positive Education)

In 2011, Martin Seligman compiled a framework, of which many have added an additional pillar, resulting in PERMAH. The six pillars are an acronym for : Positive emotion (P); Engagement (E); Relationships (R); Meaning (M); Accomplishment (A); and, Health (H). These pillars, when actioned lead to greater well-being. The grade 5 and 6 students have been learning about these pillars in their inquiry, topic 'Who We Are', where they are consider an aspect of their life that they will change to create better a well-being for themselves.

To increase our own well-being we can implement little things into our daily lives. One of these is to introduce physical activity into our schedule. I'd like to encourage all of you to join some of our students, staff and parents on a Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 8.45am as we walk, jog or run a lap of two before assembly starts. We have had a fabulous number of students joining me. It is a great opportunity to mix with different people and chat as we get the blood pumping around our body. So please come along.
