the road to glory

Queen's Baton Relay

Commonwealth Games 2018

Michelle O'Brien

Year 8 Level Coordinator

Congratulations to Luca Amore (Year 8) who earned the honour of being selected as a Queens Baton Relay Bearer for the Commonwealth Games.

Of the entire Australian population, only 3,500 baton bearers have been chosen for the honour of carrying the baton across the country to the opening ceremony on April 4, 2018.

Launched on March 17 2017 by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace, the relay takes 388 days to reach the Gold Coast for the Games - and on February 10 Luca carried it through the St Kilda leg of its long journey.

Luca earned this honour because of commitment to his chosen sport - swimming. He trains six times per week (including three early morning 5.00am sessions) and competes at State level.  Given Luca's high work ethic and passion for his sport,  we have little doubt that he could one day compete beyond National level. Perhaps he will even find himself 'on the blocks'  at a future Commonwealth Games event!

In the meantime,  Luca was very proud and happy to help the Queen's Baton on its way. The BSC community applauds the effort, commitment and determination that earned him this honour. Well done!

As a school we are very proud of Luca's achievements both in and out of the classroom. He has shown himself to be very driven, getting up for early morning swimming training sessions and then going back again some afternoons.

Luca has been able to achieve a good balance between swimming and school, consistently achieving high work practices and building positive relationships with both staff and students. Being selected as a Queens Baton Relay Bearer is a huge achievement and one of which  Luca should be very proud.

Year 8

I was selected to be a baton bearer for the Commonwealth Games because of my swimming achievements. I train 6 times a week, which equates to over 11 hours, with a club called EDA. I swim at state level and have been invited to 5 state meets. To get this opportunity I have had to be diligent and hardworking as I have to manage school and homework as well as swim training. A lot of people were nominated to be a baton bearer, but more people missed out than were chosen. It was a great opportunity as I got to meet new people and find out why they were also selected.
