2018 BSC Swimming Carnival

Richard Andrew

Sport Coordinator

The Brunswick Secondary College Sports Carnivals (Swimming, Athletics and Cross Country) are  an integral part of the Health & Physical Education curriculum.  More than this, they are important events for the whole school community. The House competition fosters a strong sense of spirit, identity and participation, along with increased leadership opportunities. The Sports Carnivals and Interschool Sport do not just showcase excellent swimming or athletic ability; they also build on values of respect, fairness, responsibility and resilience.

This year’s Swimming Carnival turned out a record number of students in attendance which demonstrates the strength of students support for their Houses and Brunswick Spirit. We had perfect weather on the day, and it was Oro who proved to be the “powerHouse” in the pool with a comfortable victory over last year’s winners, Caagar. It was great to see the new Year 7 students getting involved in the day with a consistently high rate of participation throughout all competitive events.

Winners are grinners!

House Captain - Oro

The swimming carnival was a really enjoyable day for all the Houses. It was fantastic to see students competing, giving it their best shot to bring points home to their house. I am very proud of all those who competed - it can be daunting and tough if you don't swim often. Congratulations to all the ORO swimmers who brought us the win - I can't wait to see them all competing at the upcoming Athletics Carnival. I am hoping this year ORO can pull off a clean sweep and win all three sport carnival days.... but I am sure Tim, Jess and Ella have other ideas!

House Captain - Lan Se

The carnival was a fun and successful day for all - both in and out of the water. It was great to see students from all year levels coming out and representing there house on the day. Unfortunately, Lan Se came last this year - but this has given us the motivation and determination to win at the upcoming Athletics Carnival! Here's hoping that just as many students turn out for athletics as they did for swimming!

House Captain - Caagar

This year’s  carnival was a great success. Many students from all year levels competed and scored points for their houses. It was great to see such enthusiasm from all the students.  Everyone turned out in their house colours ready to participate and have fun! While Oro won this time around - just wait for the upcoming Athletics Carnival.

Caagar’s got it in the bag!

The Swimming Carnival was a wonderful turn out! There were some great costumes on the day and lots of House Spirit on display. It was fantastic to see students competing for their houses and giving it their all.  We are sure we will see even more House Spirit at the next sports day!

Year 7

I went in all the events on the day. My friends and I were in the relay and came 5th (also known as last!)

I competed in butterfly (4th place), freetsyle (3rd place), backstroke (2nd place) and... (drum roll please!) breastroke - where I came in first!  I have qualified to compete in backstroke and breastroke at the Division Swimming level - wish me luck!

I am so thankful that BSC ran the carnival and I am looking forward to next year's carnival.  It was a really fun day.

Year 7

The swimming carnival was an exciting, energetic and all round excellent day. We loved how pristine and how cool the water was. We thought the racing was great and the cheering was unbelievable, it had much better sportsmanship than primary school ever had. We were very surprised how clean the grounds and facilities were for a public pool. Even the after-race activities were great we loved them, they were so fun. The sausage sizzle was delicious too. All up it was an awesomely majestic day, next year we hope it will be just as good or better.

Division Swimming Competition

Students who placed either 1st or 2nd in the BSC Swimming Carnival  events qualified for selection onto the BSC Swim Team that competed at the Interschool Division Meet (March 7 2018).

Luca A - Year 7
Archie B - Year 10
Jimmy H - Year 10
Louise P - Year 8
Luca A - Year 7
Archie B - Year 10
Jimmy H - Year 10
Louise P - Year 8

Having to compete against strong competitiors from larger schools makes the Division competition tough for our students.  But this year the team delivered one of our best results to date!

Archie Ballinger  competed in 5 individual events and 2 relay events.  Luca Amore competed in 4 individual events and 2 relay events. Both boys were standout swimmers for BSC and both qualified for the Regional Finals with  their strong performances. Other multiple event qualifiers were Achina Vearing (50m freestyle & butterfly) and Jimmy Hancock (100m & 200m Freestyle). Louise Powell (400m freestyle) and Ella Szymanski (100m butterfly) also qualified in single events for the next stage of competition.

Congratulations to everyone who represented the college.

You did us proud!
