message from the principal

Karen Harris

Principal

Whilst in many ways it feels as though we have only just begun the year, the end of the first term is already upon us and our term break is just around the corner.

It is apt that we are ending the term with the first of our reporting cycles with Term 1 Work Practices being reported on and the opportunity for parents to meet with teachers at parent-teacher- student  conferences.  Reflection on progress throughout Term 1 is integral to considering what work practices and habits may need to change in Term 2.  Progress reports allow teachers and coordinators to work with students and families on interventions which may lead to small or large improvements.  It is our ongoing goal at Brunswick Secondary College to have every student ‘meet or exceed’ expected learning outcomes.

I commend our students for the way they have commenced the year and the way they have worked this term.

The very near future will see some of the  new buildings open which will be exciting for students and staff who look forward to these new teaching and learning spaces.

I encourage you to periodically check our website for snapshots of student and staff achievements.  This month we are recognising Isis Holt (Year 11) and John Roberts (School Counsellor) for their sporting achievements.  There is also a great snapshot of our staff and students supporting ‘The World’s Greatest Shave’.  I extend a big thank you to Ebru Sak, one of our parents, for donating her time and hairdressing expertise to support the event.

Dr Mary Jean Gallagher is a Canadian educator who has been a key driver of whole system improvement in Ontario, Canada.  Dr Gallagher has been employed as a critical friend of the Victorian Department of Education and Training to advise the Victorian Department of Education and Training on system change.

We had the honour of hosting Dr Mary Jean Gallagher on Friday 23 March.  Vivienne  Tellefson (DET Senior Education Improvement Leader) arranged Dr Gallagher’s visit and along with Roxburgh College and Hume Central College we were chosen to highlight a literacy program within our schools.  Two of our Science teachers, Jess Sartori and Tamara Brennan  presented on the Multiliteracies in Secondary School Science research project and a video of another of our Science teachers, Tara Dinan,  was shown which demonstrated visual literacy techniques.  It was a very proud moment for us and our colleagues from other Hume-Moreland schools to have the work outlined as ‘spectacular’ by Dr Gallagher.

Our School Council is finalised for this year.  Following nominations for parent and Department of Education and Training vacancies the positions were filled without the need for an election.  We welcome two new parents to School Council this year, Oliver Goodman and Paula Thomson as well as our two Assistant Principals, Claudia Johnson and Samantha Milbourn.  Following the election of office bearers at our next meeting I will inform the school community of all members and positions via Newsfeed.

Finally,  a special thanks to the Brunswick South West Primary School community who have allowed BSC to stage our upcoming Bands Night on their premises.  Principal , Dolores Giordimaina, has given permission for the event to be staged in the primary school's gymnasium at South Daly Street, West Brunswick.  This has ensured that the event is not hindered by the building works in D Block.
