Outside the Classroom

Year 7: theatre performance (I&S)

by Katherine Girbau, teacher of Individuals & Societies

Year 7s attended the theatre performance of Storm Boy on Tuesday 23 July, nicely rounding off the unit of work they completed in Term 2. Studying both the text and film of the same name, last term they wrote their own script, carefully exploring themes of family, friendship and courage.

Students excitedly took their seats at the Southbank Theatre, The Sumner to see the MTC’s performance. The show received a lot of praise for its set design and puppetry and students commented on how this created a moving performance; so much so, there were a few teary eyes at the end!

Year 12: research facility (Physics)

by Robin Wang, teacher of Physics

On Thursday 18 July the Year 12 Physics students spent the day at the Australian Synchrotron located in Clayton. This excursion gave them an excellent opportunity to explore the world-class x-ray and infrared beamlines and their applications in medical, food and advanced material areas.

After the tour, students conducted a variety of practical experiments on the topic of light and matter. These experiments and observations raised students’ interests in the area of Particle Physics and gained them a deep understanding on Special Relativity, which is their IB Physics Option topic.
