Basketball
The 2018 Summer season for basketball has been an absolute blast, with huge participation numbers and great results across the board. It is awesome to see how many teams have been competing and also those that have made finals.
Well done to the U14 Snowy Owl girls and U14 A Barking Owls boys for making finals. The Under 14B boys’ competition will be a tough start to finals for both the Masked Owls and Barn Owls who will be tussling it out against each other for a continued chance towards the championship.
In the Under 16A boys’ the Barking Owls are battling for third place with a strong finals campaign ahead. The U16B boys’ competition sees the Masked Owls head into the finals second on the ladder with the Powerful Owls also in fourth. Could there be a College versus College Grand Final?
The Division 4 women’s Sooty Owls are placed at number 1 ahead of 8 other teams and are looking to have a very promising finals series. In Division 3 the Boobook and Snowy Owls sit in third and fifth respectively, with a strong chance of a finals matchup.
In men’s Division 2B, Barn Owls are sitting in a tidy second with a tough 1st round match as they will be playing a strong Minders team which is yet to lose this season; however, this is the finals and anything can happen on the night. Sitting in fifth place the Division 1 men’s Powerful Owls are desperate to make finals, coming good towards the season’s conclusion.
As mentioned by Mr Alexander, the basketball seasons will be staying as normal, so there will be a full winter Season beginning in early next term and concluding around late November/early December. If you intend on playing, coaching or assistant coaching next season please email him by Wednesday the 6th of June. Years 10’s this is a great way to get your community service hours up, plus its loads of fun.
Well done to all the players this season for attending trainings and good luck to all teams that have made finals this season.

A Grade Thundersticks
College Thundersticks and Monivae could not be separated on Sunday afternoon with the final score 1-1. College controlled much of the first half but could not find the back of the net. A foot off a penalty corner shot (that was my foot!) allowed Monivae a penalty stroke which they were able to convert. College hit back soon after with a sharp goal from Phoebe Sweeney. Both teams had their chances in the final minutes but neither defence could be penetrated.
Better Players: Gracie Austin, Hannah Nichols.
Strikers
Last weekend’s game against Coleraine Red proved to be Strikers toughest game yet with Maddi Mutch breaking the deadlock to score their only goal in the first half. After a half time “rev up” from coach Peter Musson the determination and drive was reinstalled with the Strikers piling on 5 second half goals. Goal scorers included Isabelle Musson scoring 3 goals, Hannah Russell scoring 1 goal and Maddi Mutch scoring 2 goals. It was great to see Chloe Russell back on the field and amongst the better players. Consistent performances also came from Hannah Russell, Shayleigh Ingelse, Maddi Mutch, Isabelle Musson, and Chloe Anderson.
B Grade Blades
They young Blades side should hold their heads high after only going down to the strong Demons side 2-0. The Blades defenders were under constant attack but goalie Julia Howells and Captain Georgie Snodgrass were brilliant on the backline. Charlotte Rowe, Macey Herman, Natalie Fetherston and Millie Howells are continuing to improve each week and with experienced players such as Millie Dopheide in support they will be a very competitive side in the finals.
B Grade Scorchers
The Scorchers played a terrific game on Sunday recording a 0-0 draw against Monivae. The Scorchers benefitted from the experience of Alyssa Hocking filling in for the weekend. Lily Cush also stepped up and was named amongst the better players. Other strong performances came from Lucy Roberts, Emily Ash and Amy Boland.

Boys' Hockey
After the week off locally to allow players to meet commitments at the Junior Country Championships in Melbourne, the season resumed last weekend and the two Division 2 sides recorded fine wins.
Gold scored nine goals and conceded two in their game against Monivae. After a slow start, the boys took control of the game and played some solid team-oriented hockey. Goalscorers were Jock Adamson (3), Clancy Munro (2), Harry Austin, David Merrin, Zac Cunningham and Jack Austin. Blue went on a second half scoring spree and ended up winners by 15-0 over Demons Coleraine. Ferg Roberts (6), Tane Nelson (3), Eren Zehir (2), Max Green, Charlie Duver, Harrison Hocking and Owen Priestley found the net as the competition’s leading team flexed its muscles. There was some excellent spreading of the ball - and effective teamwork is a hallmark of their game plan.
On Sunday, the Open team played Monivae and recorded a 4-0 victory. Goalscorers were Reagan Simons (2), Ferg Roberts and Ralph Carolan. We encountered an excellent goalkeeper and some sterling defence and, at times, lacked the composure to settle and draw players out of position. Nonetheless, we scored four good goals and played some fine hockey too, despite losing Captain Josh Read to injury mid-match. Sadly, we could not arrange a farewell goal for Old Collegian Tom Bunge, who has played the first part of the season for us and who headed to Canada on Monday. Tom had been a key member of the team for over four years and his brother played before him for several seasons so it was the end of the “Bunge era” on Sunday.
It was a good weekend after the week off and we are all in action again this weekend.
