tertiary information session

Year 12 students enjoyed a great day learning about 'beyond Brunswick' options at La Trobe University’s Bundoora Campus Tertiary Information Session on Monday 20th May.

The BSC students listened to a presentation on the benefits of tertiary study - at university, TAFE or through independent colleges – and then could participate in an expo of study providers. A lot of useful information was shared!

All the students enjoyed the trip to La Trobe University, Bundoora. At the Uni, we attended an information session about VTAC (Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre)  where we could find out about courses of interest, how to preference our courses, whether we are eligible for scholarships, how to apply for available scholarships, important dates related to deadlines and further information sessions -  and so much more!

After the presentation, we were able to talk directly to students and representatives from universities across Melbourne, including La Trobe, The University of Melbourne , RMIT, Victoria University and several other institutions like William Anglis and Collarts. We could ask questions about course requirements, recommendations and scholarships.

This excursion offered tips and insight into navigating VTAC, as well as offering us the chance to experience the La Trobe uni's vibe first hand, as Ms McCulloch (an alumni of La Trobe) took us on a walking tour around the grounds.  Click on  photos to enlarge them.

So what is VTAC?

The Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) is the central office that administers the application processes for places in tertiary courses, scholarships and the Special Entry Access Scheme at universities, TAFEs and independent tertiary colleges in Victoria (and a few outside Victoria).

  • VTAC receives and forwards application information and supporting documentation to the relevant authorities at institutions.
  • VTAC is not a selection authority, does not determine the selection criteria used by institutions and does not decide who will receive an offer. All decisions about which applicants are offered a place are made by the course selection authorities at institutions.
  • After selection decisions have been made by the course authorities at institutions, VTAC sends offer messages to successful applicants on the institutions’ behalf.

VTAC also:

  • calculates and issues the Australain Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR )for VCE students;
  • provides telephone and online information and enquiry services for applicants;
  • publishes a range of guides to tertiary study;
  • provides timely information to assist applicants via its social media networks, blogs, Facebook and Twitter; and
  • conducts information sessions for secondary school students and their parents, careers practitioners and adults returning to study.

VTAC is not a government body—it is funded by participating institutions and processing fees paid by applicants.
