Careers News

Well what are a busy time we have had in the Joseph Centre…..

Work Experience - Year 10

Last week all Year 10 students were involved in an Occupational Health and Safety incursion in preparation for Work Experience coming up in the last week of this term.

We were expertly guided by YIP Services, an outside company, that were able to provide videos and photos outlining workplace hazards – whilst sometimes very funny – it is also quite scary to see some of the unsafe behaviour in workplaces. It is of utmost importance that our students are safe whilst at Work Experience so they have all completed a General module and an Industry Specific module relevant to the industry they are going into. Certificates have now been printed out so students will be able to show their employer what they have done in preparation when they start.

Year 10s have also had a brief assembly to collect a work pack of information to assist them with getting the most out of their experience in the world of work. We wish them well in the coming weeks.

As part of this day, Year 10s also had the opportunity to complete an online career profiling tool called WIRL.  This looks at the types of jobs that may suit students according to their strengths and interests that they may not have thought about. It also looked at the type of training and study involved in the different industries they were looking at. This is important in the lead up to the subject selection process that the Year 10 students will need to consider carefully next term to ensure they are choosing the right subjects to enable them to continue further study in their desired pathway. It is of utmost importance that students study the correct prerequisite subjects to be able to undertake further study in their area of interest. Some courses are simply not accessible without the required prerequisite subjects to enter tertiary study.

This WIRL profile tool is available to any other year levels wanting to try it. See Elena in the Joseph Centre if you are interested in this.

Year 10 LEAP Students

Our fabulous Year 10 LEAP students will be starting their Certificate II in Building and Construction Pre Apprenticeship at Chisholm TAFE this Friday. They will complete the first year of this certificate by the end of this year by attending every Friday for a full day of TAFE study.  This means that they will be able to complete the pre apprenticeship by the time they finish Year 12 if they undertake VCAL, or have done enough of it to see if this is the right VET course for them so they can at least begin a different one next year.  This is all about experiencing and trying different courses to find one that is right for them in the pursuit of their future career.  So far our Leapsters have tried Engineering and Electrical. We wish them well on Friday.

Monash Champions

Last week our selected Year 9s and 10s met with their Monash Mentors in the Joseph Centre to begin working on their projects. I am looking forward to see what they will produce together to address a need within our community. Stay tuned ………

Year 9 VET Discovery Day

This week, all Year 9 students will have the opportunity to try two different workshops at Chisholm TAFE. There are 20 selections to choose from. These include Plumbing, Early Childhood and Care, Hairdressing, Screen and Media, Health Services, Automotive, Beauty Services, Tourism, Design Fundamentals, Engineering, Hospitality, Construction and more.

This is designed to introduce students to the possibility of undertaking a VET subject as part of their senior studies and gets them starting to think about future subjects in preparation for the subject selection process that will happen early next term.

Check out photos in the next newsletter to see these students at work!
