STUDENT LEADERSHIP COUNCIL

SLC END OF YEAR AND COLOUR RUN EVENT REPORT

A big thank you to all our SLC representatives for 2017 for your involvement in improving aspects of college life, developing leadership skills, being involved in decision-making, taking action and organising fund-raising and student free dress days to recognise those in our community who need our support as well as to unite our own school community. A big thank you also to the amazing work of teaching staff Mrs. Robyn Andrews, Mrs. Jenny Holt and Ms. Laura Murphy in supporting this council. The year ended on a fabulous note with the success of the first ever Color Run to raise funds for Minus 18, Get Fit. Have Fun. It brought all year levels together and despite the rain brought a lot of smiles to many faces. Thanks to Eliza Scott for coordinating this event and every student who made or threw the colors and helped with the barbecue.

Our vision for 2018 is to continue to ensure students at MCC have a strong voice in shaping their education and preparing them for a changing world. Students will do best after leaving school if engaged in their own learning and are resilient, self motivated learners. It is envisioned that students will continue to grow in their ability to have meaningful participation in policy and program development processes and at all levels next year.

Pride Squad News

Monday October 23, Mrs Ward, Mrs Andrews and two Pride Squad members attended the FMP (Frankston Mornington Peninsula) LGBTIQ action group at Headspace.

We were introduced to the new Peninsula Pride Co-ordinator Leesa Beel, networked with other schools and shared what each group is working on.

Our two student representative spoke about:

  1. Our first birthday celebrations, where members enjoyed a pizza lunch and chatted about plans for 2018 and how far McClelland had progressed in such a short time.
  2. The Regional director’s visit and the opportunity they had to meet with him and share their progress.
  3. Midsumma Festival Plans for the Frankston city library event to be held on the 5th February with Jason Ball as guest speaker. Jason was the first male AFL player who came out as gay. He will be talking about his own experiences and there will be a space for Questions afterwards. McClelland Pride Squad students are making a piece of artwork overseen by Alison Ward, Keeping with a theme of ‘making a brighter future for LGBTIQ + people.’ This will be used as a back drop to Jason Ball as he talks. There will also be an activity after Jason speaks which will be an empty rainbow where patrons are welcomed to add colour through contributing hopeful messages to the next generation of Frankston LGBTI people.
  4. Midsumma Pride March 28th January. Pride Squad students again are planning to attend and march along-side other young people from the Peninsula.
  5. Possibility of hosting a meeting at McClelland for students from other local Colleges to attend and share plans for the year.
