Dear Parents, Guardians, Students, Staff and Friends of St Norbert College

Earlier this week, we celebrated the feast of St Mary of the Cross, Australia’s first saint. One of the most used and known sayings of Mary MacKillop is:

“Never see a need without doing something about it.”

The feast day was marked with a special liturgy, where our students were reminded that we are called to be like St Mary, to be people of hospitality and welcome, to be people of action. There is an abundance of opportunities for members of our community to be people of action, particularly through, but not restricted solely to, our Campus Ministry team led by Ms Kyd.

I’ve also been delighted to witness the wonderful achievements of our students in the 29th annual Catholic Performing Arts Festival. The Festival involves nearly 21,000 Catholic school students from all over Western Australia and I am always proud to receive notifications of the achievements of our students. Once the Festival has come to a conclusion, we will acknowledge the many talents and achievements of our Performing Arts students and staff.

We finished this week with plenty of action, this time of the athletic kind, down at the Ern Clark Athletics Centre for our annual Interhouse Athletics Carnival. While specific details are still being ratified at the time this newsletter goes to the world, I am delighted to reveal the final House results:

1st: Tongerlo

2nd: Premontre

3rd: Magdeburg

4th: Kilnacrott

5th: Xanten

Congratulations to Tongerlo and all staff and students in Tongerlo House for their wonderful efforts in securing the House trophy this year. Well done to all students who participated with such enthusiasm, either athletically or in support of their peers, despite the chilly conditions. Many thanks to our families and friends who supported our students on Friday and to all staff who worked tirelessly to make the event so special. Of special note, we acknowledge the efforts of Mr Price, our Head of Sport and his team, and to our special group of Heads of House, for all their hard work in the preparation and smooth running of this year’s carnival.

Next week we celebrate a very special day in our liturgical calendar, the Feast of the Assumption, on Wednesday 15 August. It on this day, according to our faith, we believe that our Holy Mother, "having completed her course of earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory". We would like to extend a warm welcome to parents and families who wish to join us for College Masses at 10.10am (Years 7-9) and 12.00pm (Years 10-12) in St Joseph’s Church.

As we prepare ourselves for this special time, we are called to reflect on the love, goodness and grace with which we should live our lives, in the spirit of our Holy Mother.

God Bless,

Mr S Harvey (Principal)
