Our Truganini Group - ATSI students

I respect and honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders past, present and future.

I acknowledge the stories, traditions and living cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples on this land and commit to building a brighter future together.

Welcome Back Everyone!

MFGSC’s “Truganini Group” comes together to yarn; learn and grow as young Indigenous women. The group meets fortnightly and continues to support our First Nations’ students in strengthening their identities, gaining knowledge, and sharing thoughts, and stories, and too within our wider school community. The students have continued to build connections; their familiarity with myself, and mine of them, and their families. Our group is often supported by Sonia Panek.

We are excited to be working closely with, and continue to have the support of, Sarah Upton our KESO (Koorie Engagement Support Officer) who attends our Truganini sessions.

Sarah Upton is a proud Gunditjmara woman, and currently filling Melissa Lillyst’s KESO role for SWVR Geelong schools. Sarah has 7 years experiences in the education system and has experienced teaching overseas. As a new Koorie Engagement Support Officer (KESO), Sarah is always looking to connect more with her mob (family), teachers, community and parents. Sarah has also been joining in on our incursions/ excursions during the year. Her input and contribution into our discussions has continued to provide cultural guidance. Sarah also initiates our contact with the wider Wathaurong and Wadawurrung, Koorie Community, and differing supports and organisations.

Our Whole School Assembly - Smoking Ceremony has been scheduled for Homegroup time on Wednesday 9th of February on HFC. Niki and Norm are very much looking forward to coming back to MFG to perform the ceremony, which forms an important part to the start of our school year for us.

I am the ATSI Support and Truganini Teacher, and am looking forward to continuing to build our positive relationships and understandings in 2022.
