Year Advisers Reports -
Years 8 & 10
Year 8, your second year of high school is now complete, and although it was once again disrupted by Covid, there has been many positives as well. And that is what we need to focus on as we end another year.
The first two terms were very busy with lots of different events including swimming and athletics carnivals, cross country, excursions, welfare/careers day and how can we forget the long-awaited Year 8 (should have been Year 7) Camp. All these events gave a chance for all of us to have fun and relax either as a school or as a year group. And I hope you have memories to last a lifetime – who will forget Mr. Herring and Mr. Parkes being camouflaged for the commando challenge or Ms. Ridley dancing a tik tok dance. For me it was seeing the joy of achievement when you completed an activity that was out of their comfort zone!
Term 3 was the start of learning from home, after last year, we did not think that would happen again. However, I am proud of all you who engaged and participated to the best of their ability. Our online assemblies were always a highlight of my week, the laughs and hearing you all catch up was fantastic to see and hear.
Term 4 started online, but in week 4 we were back to face to face, although things were a little different, with multiple bell times and changes in the playground. However, you all did very well, coping with the changes and learning to adapt. Well Done! Our end of year presentation was a little different as well, with having to be separate from other year groups and being live streamed to your family and friends. Congratulations to all our award winners, and well done to all of Year 8 for another great year!
These holidays, please take time to recharge and spend time with family and friends. I look forward to seeing you all in 2022 as you start your Stage 5 schooling.

Mrs Karen Hogan
Year 8 Adviser
Greetings all from the end of Term 4 and what proved to be quite an eventful 2021 indeed! I want to thank the students of Year 10 and their families for the resilience and persistence they demonstrated this year.
Year 10 should be proud of their efforts in the Online Learning period of this year. In an era of uncertainty that transcended the parameters of school, our students were able to maintain focus as well as positive attitudes to still put their very best foot forward and take on the many challenges that learning from home presents. This requires maturity and perseverance and Year 10 rose to the occasion.
Towards the end of the term Year 10 took part in a Covid-modified version of the Stage 6 Prep Program consisting of Taster Week and the always enjoyable Make-A-Movie project. Feedback from both staff and students alike is that the Taster Week lessons were enjoyable and the students used this time to ask lots of questions and get familiarised with the expectations of their chosen Stage 6 courses. Remember if you have any concerns about your chosen subjects, please see Mrs James as soon as possible.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Year 10 for allowing me the privilege of being their Year Adviser for 2021. The 2022 school year has seen me accept a position at Brisbane Water Secondary College, Woy Woy Campus and sadly this means that my time Year Advising the wonderful Year 10 has come to an end. This role has been an absolute highlight of my time at HKHS as well as my teaching career. I want to thank the students of Year 10 for bringing a smile to my face each day and for just being the best ever! I’ll miss you all but I know that the very capable Ms Fitzgerald will do an outstanding job in navigating you all through Stage 6.
I hope everyone has an enjoyable Christmas break and uses this time to recharge, reset and prepare for your next exciting phase of schooling, Stage 6. 😊
