Science

with Miss Thompson

Students in Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 learnt about tree hollows this week in Science. We talked about all the different types of hollows that can be found in trees. These include:

  • Trunk top hollows
  • Bayonet hollows
  • Trunk main hollows
  • Branch end and branch middle hollows
  • Fissure hollows
  • Butt hollows

We then went on a scavenger hunt around the school yards to see if we could spot any hollows in our trees. We took photos of the hollows that we found and estimated their size. When we got back to the classroom with our photos, we used a reference chart, as well as our knowledge of local animals, to make an educated guess about what animal might use that hollow and why.

Year F/1 students continued their learning about living things by planting their own living things! We planted grass seeds (which will become the hair on the pots we decorated with our faces) and we also planted basil 🌱. It was so fantastic to have the students remind Miss Thompson about how we need to care for our plants. We made sure that we gave our seeds some water 💦 as this is very important for the growth and survival of our plants - they cannot grow or survive without it. We also made sure we put our pots in a sunny spot so that our plants get sunlight 🌞. Here are some pictures of us planting these! It was a great day to be in the garden.
