QUT Recognises  a Talented Saints Student

by Debra Fish - Head of Technology

We congratulate Year 12 Engineering student Hayden Peut who has won the QUT Dean’s Award for Engineering Prize. He was honoured with this accolade after obtaining the highest academic result of his cohort.

Hayden has received a $100 JB Hi-Fi voucher and a certificate. In addition, he is eligible for the Dean’s Award for High School Achievement. This award is a $3000 study bursary paid in Semester 1 of 2022 for engineering prize-winning students who  enrol in a full-time QUT Bachelor of Engineering single or double degree.

Well done, Hayden!

Australian Goalball Championships

Year 12 student Sidney Whipp travelled to Melbourne in the September school holidays to play in the Australian Goalball Championships as a member of the Queensland youth team.

Goalball is a team-sport played by athletes with vision impairment. The object of the game is to roll the ball into the opponent’s goal while the opposing team tries to block the ball with their bodies. Bells inside the ball help guide the players by indicating the direction of the oncoming ball.

It was a very successful competition with the Queensland team winning first place in the youth division.  Sidney was also selected as a member of the Australian all-star youth team and awarded the MVP (most valuable player) award.  He has since been asked to travel to Japan in February 2023 to attend a training camp as part of an Australian men’s development squad.

Saints Students Represent QLD in the National Youth Football Championships

By Renee Maher

In the recent break, Dominic Johnson, Patrick Maher (both Year 9) and Nick Brett (Year 10) travelled to Coffs Harbour, NSW to represent Queensland in the National Youth Football Championships.  During the five-day carnival, the boys went up against some of the best talent from across Australia, and performed admirably.  Aided by his strong performance (conceding only 3 goals in 7 games), Nick’s U15 team progressed to the grand final, with NSW Metro the eventual winners.

Before the carnival, the boys were fortunate to take to the hallowed turf of Suncorp Stadium, where they acted as flag bearers in the prelude to the Socceroos final game on home soil; an unforgettable experience.
