Dear Families,

NAPLAN

NAPLAN is a national literacy and numeracy assessment that students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit each year. It is the only national assessment all Australian students have the opportunity to undertake. NAPLAN assesses the literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through the school curriculum and allows parents/carers to see how their child is progressing against national standards.

NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process. It doesn’t replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance, but it can provide teachers with additional information about students’ educational progress.

NAPLAN also provides schools, education authorities and governments with information about how education programs are working and whether young Australians are achieving important educational outcomes in literacy and numeracy.

We have been analysing our  2023 cohort results which were extremely affirming of our education programs in Literacy and Numeracy.

Our Year Three results indicated that approximately 87% of our students were strong or exceeding in Reading, 94% in Writing and 86% in Numeracy. Our Year Five results indicated 78% were strong or exceeding in Reading, 77% in Writing and 50% in Maths.

Individual student NAPLAN results were sent home to parents today. Students sat the NAPLAN assessment in March.

Bunnings Barbecue

My apologies for the issues with the Operoo sent out last week asking for volunteers and donations for the Bunnings barbecue. The issue has now been resolved. A sincere thank you to the many families who have put their hands up to help out on 5th August and to Liz Meyer for organising the fundraiser.

Please let Jess Lumsden know if you are able to assist with the barbecue at the Athletics Carnival. jlumsden@sjsorrento.catholic.edu.au

Review

Every four years, Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Melbourne undertake a single model of review.  The School Review is used to support deep learning and ongoing monitoring of improvement throughout the four-year continuous improvement process within the School Improvement Framework.

School Review supports schools and the wider system to foster improvement in an ongoing and continuous way, as well as ensuring schools continue to meet external legislative and regulatory requirements.

School Review has two main dimensions – improvement and compliance.

Improvement - Through self-assessment and reflection  and evidence collection, schools consider their school improvement needs.

Compliance - Through verification of the minimum standards and other requirements for registration, Child Safe Standards and other State and Commonwealth requirements for Victorian Catholic schools, both schools and MACS are ensuring that external legislative and regulatory requirements are being met.

We are presently preparing for our review and will have Patricia Cowling, our reviewer, visiting the school for a few days later this term and early next term.

2024 Prep Enrolments

Prep enrolments for 2024 have been solid and we are presently deciding whether we will have one or two prep classes next year. If you are yet to enrol a sibling or have friends wanting to enrol their child, please encourage them to do so at their earliest convenience.

2022 Report to the Community

Last year's Annual Report to the Community is available on our website. It highlights our achievements from last year and includes our future directions.

Many of our school policies are also available here for families to access.

Have a great week,

Monica
