This week in Auslan:
* Grade Preps have been continuing to practise the signs in the topic About Me…
The Preps have created some self portraits to practise signing their eye colour, hair style and colour.
My hair, curly, wavy, straight, long, short, fringe, colour, black, red, brown and blonde.
My eyes, brown, blue, green and hazel (hazel is fingerspelled.)
We have learned how to sign “How old are you?” by touching our nose and replying with our age, also by touching our nose to sign the number for “I am ___ years old!!”
* Grades 1-4 are continuing with their Weather topic.
Days of the Week are signed using a lot of fingerspelling. A fingerspelling mat is attached to this news item again in case your child/ren need to use it.
Days, week, Mon, Tues, Wed, Th, Fri, Sat and Sun.
Sunday has its own special sign. Ask your child/ren if they can remember it yet?
Weather – sun/sunny, clouds, windy, rain, hail, snow, storm, lightning, thunder, temperature, hot, cold, warm, degrees.
Students in Grade 1-2 have been practising signing the days and weather through a 7-Day forecast of Spring Gully’s Weather, and the Grade 3-4’s have begun creating their own 3-Day Weather Forecast for Spring Gully using PowerPoint.
* Grade 5-6 have been learning about some of the Handshapes that are used to form different signs in the Auslan language, which will help improve our accuracy when signing. There are 38 Handshapes in total, and this week we learned the names of 6 of them:
Hook, Good, Point, Spread, Flat and Ball.
See if your child/ren can show you each of them and a couple of signs that use each different Handshape. We will learn the other 32 Handshapes over the remainder of the year.

Sandhurst Division Football
Well done to both or Senior Boys and Girls Football teams who represented the school last week.
The Boys team also had a particularly successful day, winning 6 of their 7 games in what proved to be a very strong competition. Their only loss for the day came against the eventual competition winners – Maiden Gully with a kick after the siren. The boys displayed fantastic teamwork and attack on the ball all day and should be very proud of their efforts. Thank you to Mr Greer and Rick Coburn for coaching this team and Frankie S for her support.
The Girls team had 2 wins and a draw out of their 5 games. For all of the girls, this was the first time they have played competitive football and they were able to pick up the rules and pace of the game very quickly (highlighted by some ferocious tackling). It was a pleasure to coach such an enthusiastic, well behaved and supportive group of girls – well done!
District Athletics
55 students from grades 3-6 represented the school on Tuesday at the Deborah District Athletic Sports. The weather was perfect and the quality of competition was excellent. It was great to see our students trying hard and competing to the best of their ability.
We had a number of outstanding individual results, however it was our relay teams that stood out on the day – with 7 of our 8 teams winning their respective events.
Congratulations to our 10 Years Boys, 10 Years Girls, 11 Years Boys, 11 Years Girls, 12 Years Boys and 12 Years Girls who have won through to the next level of competition. Our 9 Years Girls also won their event, however 9 years don’t progress any further than District level. Our 9 Years Boys were unlucky to be pipped right on the finish line, however they should be very proud of the efforts in coming second.
All students should be congratulated for their exceptional efforts and behaviour on the day.
Based on their results from the Sports, we now have a number of students who have qualified to represent the school at the Sandhurst Division Athletic Sports on Monday the 11th of September (last week of Term 3). I will inform students of their selection once this information comes to hand.
