Art/Tech - Design & Technology Workshop

Subject Name: Design & Technology

Unit of Study: Design & Technology Workshop

Brief Description: By constructing products, students learn how to use a selection of hand tools and machinery (steel rule, tenon saw, hammer, plane, disk sander, pillar drill) to produce a useful and quality product. They will learn and apply knowledge and skills to make wood joints, generate creative ideas, work as a team (peer support and tidying up). In this practical study students are able to learn in a visual and practical context.

Scaffolding Learning

At the conclusion of this unit of study students will have:

An understanding of key knowledge

  • Identify OHS regulations and requirements
  • Follow a process in designing and constructing a product
  • Compose a Folio / Sketchbook to demonstrate design processes

Attained these key skills

  • Employ OHS regulations and requirements when in the workshop whilst using hand tools and equipment.
  • Create various components and products whilst utilising a variety of complex tools and equipment.
  • Compose a folio that illustrates the designs process undertaken in this study

Demonstrated the Victorian curriculum standards and capabilities

  • Investigate and make judgements on how the characteristics and properties of materials are combined with force, motion and energy to create engineered solutions (VCDSTC056)
  • Conceptualise, plan and design art works that express ideas, concepts and artistic intentions (VCAVAV043)
  • Create, present, analyse and evaluate displays of artwork considering how ideas can be conveyed to an audience (VCAVAP044)
  • Analyse and interpret artworks to explore the different forms of expression, intentions and viewpoints of artists and how they are viewed by audiences (VCAVAR045)
  • Analyse, interpret and evaluate a range of visual artworks from different cultures, historical and contemporary contexts to explore differing viewpoints (VCAVAR046)

Assessment Tasks

Students will be required to complete the following assessment tasks:

  • Safety
  • Design Folio
  • Project - Product

Resources

  •  Folio Book (A3 Sketch Book)

Pathways

This unit of study could provide students with the following pathway.
