Unit of Study:  Coaching and Sport Leadership   

 

Brief Description: Do you aspire to be a sports coach or umpire? Do you want to improve your communication skills and confidence? If sports leadership interests you then this Sport Skills unit of study is for you!!  

Students will be challenged to develop higher levels of physical and critical thinking skills relevant to a variety of sports and activities.  They will be required to coach, umpire and lead others by providing input into strategy and tactics that enhance performance

 

Scaffolding Learning

At the conclusion of this unit of study students will have: 

 

An understanding of key knowledge

  • Understand and implement strategies, tactics, and game plans.
  • Recognise and apply principles of fair play, sportsmanship, and teamwork
  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of individuals within a team and their impact on team dynamics.

Attained these key skills 

  • Develop teamwork, communication, and cooperation skills
  • Solve problems and make decisions in game scenarios, such as reading defences, identifying opportunities, and adapting strategies
  • Develop communication and leadership skills within a team context, including effective listening, giving instructions, and providing constructive feedback.

Moving the body

  • Perform and refine specialised movement skills in challenging movement situations (VCHPEM152)
  • Develop, implement and evaluate movement concepts and strategies for successful outcomes (VCHPEM154)
  • Evaluate own and others’ movement compositions, and provide and apply feedback in order to enhance performance situations (VCHPEM153)

Understanding movement

  • Design, implement and evaluate personalised plans for improving or maintaining their own and others’ physical activity and fitness levels (VCHPEM155)
  • Analyse the impact of effort, space, time, objects and people when composing and performing movement sequences (VCHPEM156)

Learning through movement

  • Devise, implement and refine strategies demonstrating leadership and collaboration skills when working in groups or teams (VCHPEM158)
  • Transfer understanding from previous movement experiences to create solutions to movement challenges (VCHPEM159)
  • Reflect on how fair play and ethical behaviour can influence the outcomes of movement activities (VCHPEM160)

Assessment Tasks

 

Students will be required to complete the following assessment tasks:

  •  Design and teach a warm-up to be completed by your peers
  •  Team teaching a sport of your choice
     

Additional learning opportunities

  • Students will also be given the opportunity to run a tabloid sports session for the Macleod College primary school to further develop their leadership and communication skills

  • Physical Education uniform
  • This elective will be predominantly practical, but some theoretical classes will also be required
