Changes to the Timetable and Curriculum- Term 3

From July, DE provide the second half of our tutoring funding. This will allow Libby Fullard to deliver more tutoring sessions. To accommodate this, we will welcome Rachel Glassy to Newham Primary School on a Wednesday to take 3/4 while Madame Lee teaches French.

Unfortunately for us, but lovely for Rachel, she has a couple of trips planned, one overseas. While she is away Michelle Griffiths will step in. Michelle is an experienced small school teacher and principal. We look forward to both Rachel and Michelle being with us.

NAIDOC WEEK: For our Elders

We read some informational texts about Frist Nations Elders and discussed our ideas using question prompts. The students came up with the following ideas.

What does it mean to be a First Nations Elder?

It is someone who shares their experiences because all people have different experiences. (Archer)

What makes someone a First Nations Elder?

Someone who teaches younger people things that they know. (Sam)

Someone who is grandparents teaches things to kids (Essie)

Are all older people Elders?

No. An elder is someone who has important jobs like teaching people and standing up and doing the talking when someone dies. (Annie)

Why is it important for First Nations peoples to listen to their Elders?

They teach them things like not to go out on their own because animals might hurt them. (Quinn)

How do you show respect for Elders?

Be kind to them and listen to them. (Jackson)

What can Elders teach us?

They tell us things to learn (Brydie)

What is respect?

You have to be kind and also show respect to Elders. We share our friendship and kindness. They show us how to look after the planet. (Alsiha)

Why should all Australians show respect to First Nations Elders?

We need to show them respect and listen to them because when they get older they need to teach us things. It’s important to show respect for what happened to them. (Audrey)
