GAP YEAR

Considering a GAP year?

After 12 years at school, it’s no surprise some students are fed up with study.

If you’re not sure what you want to do once school’s over, or if you’re just ready for a break then a Gap Year could be the answer.

A Gap Year is the name we give a long break taken between high school (or university) and what comes next. It’s a great time to take time away from formal study or work because you’re generally not burdened with debt or family that will make taking time out difficult later in life.

Take the GAP year quiz here

You could travel, work, experience, or learn on a Gap Year.

Skill Builder: What you need to know about tax

If you've made money in the past 12 months, then you may need to lodge a tax return with the ATO (Australian Taxation Office). It's not tricky, and you may be able to get a tax refund if you've paid too much tax. Watch the video to find out more:

What's Next?

If you have (or want to get) a job, then you need to do a couple of things to prepare for tax time. These are:

  1. Get a Tax File Number (TFN) - it's quick and easy and free - apply here
  2. Nominate (and join) a superannuation fund. Three good options for young people are Future Super, Student Super, and Australian Ethical, but there are other great funds out there so do some research. Once you've joined a fund, let your employer know.
  3. Get access to your MyGov account and connect your ATO profile, so you can lodge your tax online for free with MyTax

SBATs (School-based apprenticeships and traineeships)

What is an SBAT

School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBAT) allow students to train and get paid work while completing a VET Certificate while studying VCE or VCAL.

A School-Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship (SBAT) offers students the option of combining their senior secondary education with part-time employment and skills training. The program is undertaken under a formal training contract with an employer and has a training plan registered with the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA). The training must lead to a nationally recognised qualification, as determined by the VRQA.

To find out more about SBATs contact Kendra Scaife at kendra.scaife@education.vic.gov.au

HeadStart SBATs

HEADSTART Apprenticeships and Traineeships focus on:

  • ensuring students complete Year 12 alongside their apprenticeship/traineeship
