Online Opportunities

Bringing opportunities to our students during online learning

MHS Oliver Library supporting online learning.

Did you know that about 10 percent of the Merrylands High School Oliver library collection is available online, via the Student portal?  Of the 12 293 resources in the library collection, there are 1218 digital resources which may be accessed whenever you are logged onto your student portal.  Just open the “Oliver Library” tab on the student portal home page, this will take you to the MHS Oliver Library home page.

To locate online resources you type the word ‘website’ following the word you have entered into the Oliver search tab.   To give an example - to search under the search term ‘water’, there are 408 results, but when searching using the term ‘water website’ there are 59 results.  To open these digital resources just click the item title, and then click ‘open website’, found on the lower left of the resource description page.

The year 7 and 8 geography classes have been learning how to use Oliver when studying the topics of Water in the World, and Place and Livability during term 3.  Once each week the Teacher Librarian, Mr Kay, has joined each geography google classroom, and provided links to resources in the MHS Oliver library collection which support a broader understanding of these topics.

R U OKAY?

Staff and students at MHS celebrated R U OK? Day. This day is a reminder that we all should be reaching out to our friends, family, teachers and colleagues and asking them if they are ok. These conversations are especially poignant during these times. So, next time you see your teacher; ask them R U OK?. A little conversation can go a long way. #RUOK? #itsoktonotbeok

Positive Messages for R U OK? Day

The Year 8 cohort collaborated positive messages to share among each other in light of R U OK? Day. The students used Jam-board to share these messages through virtual sticky notes.

Wellbeing Fridays

In LEAP, we value our students’ wellbeing and the importance to communicate with their peers in a relaxed environment. Therefore, every Friday has been a great opportunity for us to get all together as a faculty to do some fun activities and online games. Our Wellbeing Fridays included playing Kahoot, google Earth activities, and other trivia. Students’ engagement online has been acknowledged by introducing a star of the week during the meetings as well as holding a LEAP Olympics competition and awarding our champions virtual medals.

Appreciation Photo Competition

During week 3 MHS ran an online Photo Competition for an opportunity to win a $10 Canteen Voucher! All students needed to do was share a photo captioned 'I APPRECIATE'. Check out our lucky winners who will redeem their voucher when they return to school!

CAN YOU GET CREATIVE!?

Using the household items of PEGs and/or STATIONARY year 8 had to create something! Congratulations to our winners Hiba Assaad, Cooper Lay and Sheida Savari.

ATAR Eligible Virtual Courses

Year 10 students were able to express their interest via our VET coordinator or career advisor to enrol in ATAR-eligible virtual courses that lead to a nationally recognised qualification. Visit the link below to find out more.  Expression of interest closed on 3 September 2021.

Book Week

During Book Week, our Teaching and Learning Faculty hosted a Book Week Competition. Students from Year 8 and 9 were tasked with the drawing of their favourite book character and a description regarding why there chosen character was their absolute favourite. Students used their imagination and the descriptions of their favourite characters from the novels to draw!  Students created outstanding drawings of their favourite characters.

Premier Sporting Challenge

Being active during lockdown has been a massive struggle in the community. Thankfully, at Merrylands High School students were still able to participate in the Premier's Sporting Challenge using the PSC virtual app. Students recorded their physical activity participation via the app and were aiming for the ‘Diamond Level’ Award. Looking after your wellbeing and being physically active during this difficult period has been particularly important, and this program has helped motivate many of our students.
