A Sense of Humus

Update

What better way to get out and about in the soil when you are at home doing remote learning! As part of their learning about soil biology and healthy soils, Year 9 students are participating in the national initiative “Soil Your Undies”.

Students were each supplied with a pair of (new!) pure cotton white undies along with a set of instructions. Last week they were instructed to bury them five centimeters deep, somewhere on their farm or in their garden and leave them there for eight weeks - then they will dig them up.

This experiment aims to measure the level of microbial activity in the soil. The less there is remaining of the undies, the more microbial activity there has been. The higher the microbial activity, the healthier the soil. Stay tuned for the results in eight weeks!
