Interschool competition
Chess players on the move
One positive factor to arise from the COVID-19 pandemic is the worldwide increase in popularity in the game of Chess. Help also by the book The Queens Gambit, which became a Netflix hit.
St Norbert College has a long history of playing interschool Chess but last year the competition was discontinued due to the pandemic.
The good news is that although there is no official face-to-face metropolitan Chess league we can join, we have started to challenge other secondary schools.
On Tuesday 3 August, nine of our best players went to Guildford Grammar School for the first “friendly” match. Our team consisted of:
- Tony Ngo (Captain) Year 12 M5
- Jeann Valdez Year 10 T2
- Theodore Ciungwanara Year 10 K5
- Ryan Price Year 10 X6
- Preston Anticevic Year 9 K1
- Cameron Lyons Year 9 K2
- Matthew Sanchez Year 10 X4
- Deji Yin Year 10 M6
- Jonathan Le Year 10 T5
The boys from both schools thoroughly enjoyed their games and a more structured tournament is planned for next term with Guildford Grammar.
Chess is played every lunchtime in the Br Patrick Forum and all level of players are welcome. We also have an outdoor chess set which is used when weather and time permits.
