WHAT'S HAPPENING @ SCSC?

Year 7 - Lockdown Fun

UNITE: Year 7s celebrated the success of our cohort both at school and in the community. PJs, pets and Kahoots all made a feature in our virtual assembly led by Learning Curriculam Leader (LCL), Mr. McLoughlan.  It was fantastic to see students celebrating each other and demonstrating our school's value of Unite.  Massive shout out to our barrel nominees and our winner Katie, as well as Kahoot champ Taylor.

The year 7 team is proud of all our students for staying united and supportive of one another.

Years 7 - 9 Pyjama Day

UNITE: What better way to celebrate pyjama day than with our FUSE bookshelves being

topped up with new books!  Reading is embedded into our FUSE program (and a great thing to do in your PJ's) for Year 7, 8 and 9 and students were invited to pick books they were interested to read and to add to the communal shelves.  Happy reading!

Year 8 DigiTech Excursion

Our Year 8 students had a fun day with a visit to Geelong Technical School. They had the opportunity to build a project using Snap! Coding as well as using a Hummingbird electronics robotic kit to design and create an automated adventure golf course.

Year 9/10 - Girl In Charge

STRIVE: The Girl in Charge students and facilitators participated in a fantastic Box Fit session with former Australian Netballer Madi Browne at Upstate Geelong last week.

The girls had an amazing experience and we thank Madi once again for generously giving her time to this wonderful program.

The Girl in Charge Program is an initiative conducted by Detectives Kylie Roberts, Kylie Power, Kaitlyn Poustie and our staff member Kim Wittman for Year 9/10 girls to gain a Netball Umpiring Qualification as well as developing self-confidence personal drive and leadership skills.  Along the way they get to meet a number of brilliant role models e.g.  Madi who officially launched the program today.

Madi is a former Australian netballer who has an incredibly long list of achievements. She has won 2 Liz Ellis Diamond Trophies - the equivalent of Brownlow Medals in football and was regarded as the world’s best netballer just a couple of years ago.  What’s just as impressive is her passion for equality for women in sport and all fields of life.

Our students are very fortunate and the students so excited about the program.

The positive energy created by the brilliant facilitators was infectious!  The launch was attended by leaders from Victoria Police as well as sponsors Warwick Brown (SC Times) Tim Carson (Mc Cartneys Real Estate) and also Jack Pearson (Youth Development Officer SC Shire).  The SC Times and McCartneys continue to support our programs such as this and the Great Vic Bike Ride.  We cannot thank them enough for their ongoing support.

Massive thanks also to our staff, including year level teachers and principal team for assisting in the selection of students, as well as our unbelievable office staff who always support programs that make a significant difference to the lives of our students and their families.

Year 9 MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY

Work of Alexander P.
Work of Alexander P.

This semester, Year 9 Materials Technology students have been busy working on their introductory project, a timber chopping board. In creating their projects, students have applied traditional wood working techniques such as hand sawing, sanding and routing. In addition to developing these hands on skills, they have also been able to customise each chopping board

Here we show the great work from our students Daniel R. and Alexander P.

Year 9 VISCOM

FLOURISH: Last week our Year 9 Viscom students had a paper house design challenge. Students worked in teams of two and designed and constructed a house of their choice, using all of 2 sheets of paper - including all of the scraps!

Teams then had to 'pitch' their design, it's features and design decisions regarding how they creatively used all of the materials. Classmates then voted on their favourite designs to determine the winner!

Year 10 FeedMe Surf Coast

RESPECT: Our Year 10 students are volunteering their time to help out our friends at FeedMe Surf Coast.

Our students are learning the value of belonging to a fabulous community that supports each other.  Great work legends!

Year 10 Studio Arts

Studio Arts have been exploring Still Life and exploring a range of materials.  Last week, they worked with water colour and oil pastels to expand their repertoire of art making techniques and processes.

YEAR 12 - Remember, you've got this!

UNITE: We welcomed back our students after their remote learning period. This year is moving very quickly, especially for our Year 12 students in their final year of secondary schooling.

We shared some treats to welcome them back on-site, with cupcakes and a little motivational 'you got this' message.

We hope this kind gesture put a smile on some faces and reminds our young people that they are doing an amazing job and we are so proud of their efforts.

Mental Health Forum

We applaud Tyson, one of our school captains, for sharing his thoughts on Mental Health.

WORKPLACE LEARNING

STRIVE: Some more Structured Workplace Learning students in action!  Well done to Jaz

at Rippling Curls Hairdressing, Josh at Great Escapes Landscaping and Jamo with Adam Bird Electrics.

College Production is BACK ON!

Our SCSC College Principal Erin Wright is so happy to share the best news ever, that THE COLLEGE PRODUCTION IS BACK ON!  The community can now attend the event again, which will be held from September 1st to 3rd, in the College gymnasium.  The DET School Operations Guide was updated yesterday and now includes a section specific to running productions on College grounds. The students have been advised today and are thrilled (this is the best part!).  We look forward to opening ticket sales up soon - so stay tuned for details and we cannot wait to share this event with you all.  Unfortunately, there are no changes related to the Senior School Formal.  This is due to the event involving a dance floor which are currently not allowed to operate statewide.  We are finalising re-booking for early term 4 to try again.

Introducing...

LaLa Barlow

LaLa is one of our newest members here and we welcome LaLa to the SCSC team!

Which subjects do you teach?

At SCSC I will be doing Year 8 HUMS and Year 10 Geography and my methods are English, Drama, Music and Dance and I’m also a singing and piano teacher.

What did  you do before teaching?

I am obviously a teacher, but first and foremost, a performer and musician. Prior to undertaking my teaching degree, I actually studied Musical Theatre! So, in addition to teaching in various capacities in schools across both Victoria and in the UK
(I lived there for a little while), I've balanced my teaching career with one on stage. I've been very lucky to have been able to play roles in musical theatre productions, films, cabaret, TV, fringe festivals and tour and sing with live bands. So as you can imagine, I have a HUGE passion for the Performing Arts and have been very extraordinarily lucky to have been able to pair that nicely with my career as an educator. I've also worked pretty consistently over the years for schools, performing arts academies and universities as a choreographer and musical director. Since the pandemic, the performing arts industry has taken quite a hit so I’ve been very lucky to call upon my teaching skills and jump full time into a role here at SCSC!

What are you looking forward to most about working at SCSC?

Most of my work has been as a relieving teacher and doing part time contracts, which I enjoy because of the variety - but I  must say, I am really looking forward to  getting to know the students better during my time here and forge some amazing relationships with everyone. And with teaching Year 8 FUSE, there is absolutely no shortage of variety 😊  I really love the energy at SCSC – everyone is so positive and kind and the staff have been beyond supportive.  Looking forward to an amazing and enjoyable five months ahead!
