Classroom News - Year 6

Mr Garraud & Mrs Walters

Getting CPR skilled!

All of Stage 3 attended a CPR awareness workshop on Monday afternoon. The students were very interested in the steps they should follow should someone need their help in an emergency.

Getting Healthy!

Students will spend the next two weeks investigating the effect of drugs on our bodies and strategies for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Last week we identified the physical impacts of smoking on silhouettes the students drew in chalk.

Getting to work on the Operetta!

This term students will be working to write scripts and storyboards for their Operetta performance which we hope to record in Week 7. Last week they storyboarded and filmed one minute silent era style films educating the audience on the perils of smoking. Over the coming weeks we will develop our understanding of filming techniques and how to apply them to our own film.

Getting pattern-y!

Over the coming weeks, students will be exploring the concept of number and geometric patterns. They had a guest visit from a tradie who came to work with the students on developing patterns for tiling bathrooms.

Using materials and having hands-on experiences is still an important part of the learning even in the upper years of primary. It assists to unpack more abstract concepts and written expression. As you can see from the photograph, paddlepop sticks assisted us to find the rule "y=2 x X + 1"!

Getting prepared! Confirmation Preparation

Students are currently undertaking a unit of work as a class exploring the Sacrament of Confirmation. This curriculum unit will also include learning experiences that will assist students who are making the sacrament to prepare for Confirmation. This is a result of COVID this preparation would have otherwise been completed as external lessons with the Parish.

In the Year 6 Google Classroom, you will find a section that includes a series of links that will support your child in the process of choosing their Confirmation name and knowledge about the saint chosen. Please feel free to access these links at home when you are discussing this over the coming weeks. In addition, any additional resources will also be added to this Google Classroom post to support you as their first educators.

We look forward to supporting your child’s spiritual journey of preparing the sacrament.

Getting excited! Upcoming Events

As the end of the year approaches, it takes a little twist as a parent of a Year 6 child and the focus shifts to 'the end of Primary School' and the start of the 'lasts'.

It is stating the obvious that these events will look and unfold significantly different from previous years because of COVID. However, rest assured that every effort and creative muscle is being exercised by the students, staff and Executive to deliver as many opportunities and experiences for your child as possible!

We are looking forward to the following events that your child and your family can get excited about:

  • Preparation and presentation of the 'Operetta' (COVID style)
  • STEP Day at O'Connor (pending)
  • Year 6 Farewell gathering (in some form)
  • Year 6 'Fun Day' (whatever we are allowed to do at the time!)
  • Christmas activities (craft but no glitter included!)
  • Sports Gala Day at Tamworth (pending)
