Classroom News - Year 5

Mrs Smith, Mr Lester and Mrs Newsome

Week 2 - Curriculum Matters

We are settling back into our routines in Year 5, with students and teachers working hard to cover all content prior to the end-of-year.

This week is our last on our Geography unit - we will begin Science again next week. Our new Science unit, May the Force Be With You, focuses on describing and exploring different forces and the transfer and transformation of energy.

We will also finish our Maths unit on Position this week. The classes have been looking at maps, locating places using grid references, and studying the compass rose, legends, and scale to measure the distance between places. Next week we will begin a unit of work focusing on number and algebra.

We are continuing our study of the text Rules of Summer and students have been busy making connections, predicting, asking questions, and inferring, when viewing the text. We are focusing once again on Narrative in writing and the classes have been working on composing sizzling starts to their stories. We will do a BIG WRITE in Year 5 on Wednesday and the topic is The Tsunami. Students should have brought Talk Homework home on Monday.

In Religion, we continue our unit of work on the sacraments, and this week we will be looking more deeply at the Sacrament of Penance. Your child should be able to tell you what a sacrament is and also be able to name the 7 sacraments.

CPR awareness:

All of Stage 3 attended a CPR awareness workshop on Monday afternoon. The students were very interested in the steps they should follow should someone need their help in an emergency.

Book Week:

Thanks to all those students who have constructed a curious creature for the Library display. Also, it is wonderful to hear the children practising their raps for the Jingle / Rap competition. Well done kids - your great enthusiasm is very evident.

School Supplies:

It is important that all students have their own pencils, rulers, erasers, highlighters etc. It can be very time consuming waiting for students to find their belongings or to look for class spares which at this time of year, are very light on.

Leadership

Mr Lester and I have been talking with Year 5 about how they can display leadership within the school and the classroom. Later in the term, we will have a leadership day that will focus on thinking about the roles they may wish to take on in Year 6 and the qualities and skills they will need in order to successfully carry out these duties. We have told them that it is never too late to turn things around if needed, and really show us their potential. There are so many opportunities every day to show leadership and service, and we encourage the students to find them.
