Classroom News - Year 2

Miss Simpson, Mrs Phelps and Mrs Cain

Year 2 is very excited to have returned to school for term 4. We have started reading chapter books now and are enjoying some Roald Dahl in our reading of George's Marvellous Medicine.  It has been encouraging to see the children engaged with this new reading adventure and bringing in other texts by Roald Dahl to our learning environment.

We continue to work hard in spelling, reading and writing as we explore being more independent learners in readiness for Year 3. For the next 3 weeks we are investigating all things to do with splendid concoctions.

The Year 2 teachers look forward to reviewing the home reader journals each Thursday. If home readers do not come to school on Thursdays, they can still be changed on any other day.

In Religion we are learning about our relationships with God, our families and our community. Studying some gospel stories such as the healing of the leper and the woman anointing Jesus has helped us explore ideas and values around justice, compassion, acceptance, dignity, respect and goodness.

Last week we went on a scavenger hunt for different three digit numbers. All of Year 2 were able to show their knowledge of place value while they found their numbers in some newspapers. This week we have been counting and recognising our Australian currency and its value.

In Geography we are learning about People and Places. So far we have identified places we visit and why people visit different places. We have also learned why it would be hard for people to get to different places.  We made board games this week with lots of challenge cards that stopped us from getting to our destination. It was fun to think of the reasons and play it with our friends.

In PDHPE, we are studying personal, social and community health. Our focus this fortnight has been to explore feelings and how they are expressed. We particularly were looking at understanding how to recognise someone’s feeling by the expression on their face. To show our understanding we were all given a different emotion that we drew on our paper plate. They turned out beautifully!
