FOSTER CARE WEEK SEPTEMBER 13 TO 19

Celebrating the Value of Carers

Foster Care Week raises awareness of Foster Carers in the community and is an opportunity to celebrate our appreciation for the invaluable contribution they make to the lives of children and young people in need.  During this time of Covid-19 restrictions it is even more important to recognise the value of a Foster Carer’s role to nurture children and young people’s physical, mental and educational wellbeing.  It is also a time to reflect on our own ability to assist with the increasing demand for foster carers.  If you would like to know more about the process of becoming a foster carer please contact MASP on

Try these ideas to accumulate steps for yourself and keep your students active as well:

  • Laps around school oval to start the day or at lunch time.
  • Lunch time games and competitions such as staff vs students games; skipping, basketball, soccer etc.
  • Watch/participate in online exercise sessions or perform set tasks and convert your steps eg; 30 mins of moderate activity = 3000 steps.
  • Individualise your step goal and try to achieve an extra 3000 steps per day; see more information below!

Ten thousand steps – is just above the recommended level of daily physical activity for a healthy adult aged 18-64  years.  Of course, some people accumulate a lot fewer steps per day – for example, older people, those with a chronic disease, and office workers.  And others do a lot more: children, runners, and some blue-collar workers.  So the 10,000 goal is not suitable for everyone.  Setting a lower individual step goal is fine as long as you try to add about 3,000 to 4,000 steps to your day.  This means you will have done your 30 minutes of activity each day.

In Australia, the average adult accumulates about 7,400 steps a day.  So an additional 3,000 to 4,000 steps through dedicated walking will get you to the 10,000 steps target.

Challenge yourself this October to step a little more!
