SHARE YOUR STORY!  2020 REVIEW OF THE DISABILITY STANDARDS FOR EDUCATION 2005

Are you an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person with disability, or their family member or carer?  If so, we want to hear from you.

The Australian Government is consulting on the 2020 Review (the Review) of the Disability Standards for Education 2005 (the Standards) until 25 September 2020.

Throughout consultations, we are keen to hear from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with disability about their experiences in education.

The Standards themselves help to make sure that students with a disability can take part in education and training on the same basis as students without a disability.  The Standards help people understand the rights of students with disability, and outline the responsibilities of education and training providers to students with disability.

What is happening?

We are reviewing the Standards to check if they are working well, through a public consultation process.  We do this every five years to make sure they are supporting students with disability and to see if any improvements can be made.

We want to hear the stories and education experiences of current, former and future Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with disability, their families and carers, supporters, community, and educators – anyone who is interested in the rights of students with disability.

How can I be involved?

There are lots of ways.  Due to COVID-19 restrictions, most activities will occur online through a dedicated website.   You can join a focus group, complete a questionnaire, and find out more at the Consultation Hub

If you are not sure what you want to say, you can use the discussion paper as a guide.

For more information about how to get involved in the consultations, including support to register for a webinar or to complete the questionnaire, please contact The Social Deck at engage@thesocialdeck.com or phone 0491 617 118.

How will my information be used?

The information you share will help inform the Review.  We will use this information to check if the Standards are working well and find ways to make them better.  If something you tell us is used in the Review, we will make sure you cannot be identified.

Consultations are open until 11.59pm AEST on Friday, 25 September 2020.

The Australian Government Department of Education, Skills and Employment, on behalf of the Minister for Education, is undertaking the review.
