MCG’s Road Trip Around Australia

Dear Staff, Students and the MGC Community
I am very excited to announce a new whole-school based activity/challenge: MCG’s Road Trip Around Australia.
As a school community, we are going to start our virtual road trip in Melbourne and travel around anti-clockwise on the A1 National Highway, aiming to cover a grand total of 14,500kms. How will we be able to do this with current restrictions? Easy….by logging our kilometres travelled using any human powered mode of transportation. This can be a walk, jog, skate, scoot, row, run or ride.
This is not a competition but a school community building activity. Open to all staff and students, as well as any friends/family members living in their households, I hope that this activity enables us to connect with each other to improve our mental and social health and wellbeing (which reaping the benefits of regular physical activity).
The challenge will run as follows:
- Begins on Monday September 14th and finishes on Sunday October 4th
- Any human powered distances count: walk, jog, run, swim, scooter, skate, treadmill, rowing erg, stationary bike etc.
- Participants to record their distances travelled using phones, activity trackers, apps or Google Maps
- Distances covered will need to be logged using the dedicated Microsoft Form by clicking HERE.
- Uploads should be completed after each bout of physical activity to get an accurate progression. If you skip a day or forget to record your distance you can always upload multiple days’ worth at a time.
- To avoid multiple emails and Teams notifications, I have created a Microsoft Team for all participants which you can add yourself to by clicking HERE. This Team will be used for regular updates and a place to post photos/video/motivational comments to each other.
- All members of the household can participate. For example: a brother or sister can go for a 20km bike ride by themselves and count it to your total OR a family of four can go on a 5km walk and count it as 5km x 4 people = 20km).
I look forward to seeing our progress,
Andrew Fero-Kovassy*
*The original idea was suggested by Year 9 student Victoria Trentin. Any success in this challenge will be thanks to the initiative and leadership skills she used to approach me with the idea.
