Principal's Update

“You would not be here today if this were your defining moment.  Live this day and move towards your dreams.” Dr. Steve Maraboli

It is hard to believe that we have only 3 weeks left of the first year.  We leave for camp in 2 weeks.  It is many “defining moments” with many more to follow that make this year so special.  We will continue to share the highlights that happen each and every day.  We will be having an assembly during the GOAL session next Monday and provide students with an update about camp planning.  We also have increased numbers for 2019 and will be adding an additional learning team to accommodate the increase in numbers.  All learning teams for 2019 will be co-ed.  This a work in progress as we move into the  new year.

The Innovate team working with Damian Farrow, who is one of our parents and a member of school council, and his team at Victoria University have developed and delivered an exciting biomechanics unit to our Year 7 students.  They had an excursion last week to Vic University as part of it.  Thank you to Damian for sharing his expertise and the curriculum program with us.  The students have a greater understanding of the workings of the body.  Please ask them about their learning.

Students have also been down to Ricketts Point for snorkelling as part of the BEST Program.  It is a start of an exciting link with our local marine sanctuary.  Although, the groups today have been postponed due to winds.  We also had Ancient Day Incursion on Friday where students had first hand experience with a number of ancient world item

We have had a number of schools over the last 2 weeks visit to see how we use our spaces along with what teaching and learning is like at our school.  They came from Brighton Secondary College, the new Preston High School which will open in 2019 and Fountain Gate Secondary.  It is wonderful to support the system as a leader in innovative teaching and learning practices.

The Great Victorian Bike Ride was a tremendous success with strong involvement from students and parents.  The students demonstrated perseverance and commitment throughout the ride especially in climbing some of those big hills. Thank you to the wonderful staff that led the event—Sarah Keating and Tristan Ross-Brewin.

Literacy and Numeracy

We will be doing some end of year assessments for all students.  The students will complete the Progressive Achievement Test in Maths and Reading.  We will also undertake a school based writing assessment and general numeracy assessment.  The outcomes will be shared with parents and students as well as providing a sound basis for our future planning.  This will be an ongoing each year and a fantastic predictor of future results.

Presentation Night

We look forward to seeing all students and parents on December 13th at 7pm for our first presentation night in the gym.  The evening is  a celebration of what we have achieved and the amazing successes of our students during our foundation year.  We have a number of awards including the Goldstein Award being presented by MP Tim Wilson.  We have the Deputy Mayor of Bayside, Cr Rob Grinter, presenting awards for the Leaders of Sustainability.  We will also be presenting the Holland Foundation award. We have a guest speaker Dr. Hannah McDougall who is a paralympian in swimming and cycling.  We will also have some student performances and the presentation of the House trophy.  It will be a fantastic night filled with highlights from throughout the year. Beaumaris Bendigo Bank, Lamont Books, Campion Books, Beaumaris Books and the Beaumaris Concourse Traders’ Association have been very generous and contributed towards our CORE values awards and the Believe and Belong awards.  We will recognise the names of the providers in our end of year newsletter, the  presentation night program and next year’s newsletters as well.

It will be an evening of highlights and celebration.  It is about setting the culture of connectedness right from the first year. Please be sure to join us for this very special event.

Alumni Reception

Our Alumni Reception will now be held in the Bob Whiteway Resource Centre on Wednesday December 12 from 7pm-8:30pm.  An invitation was sent out to all the alumni that signed up this year.  Please find the invitation attached.

School Council Profiles

Carly Skinner

I grew up in Bayside and have lived in Beaumaris for the past 10 years. I want my children to grow up in the Beaumaris that drew us here – a strong community, welcoming and fair, in a beautiful physical environment. When the opportunity arose in 2017, I joined School Council to support Debby, who in my opinion, is an exemplary leader and educator, and to make a contribution to our community in the formative years of Beaumaris Secondary College. I’m proud to be a member of the School Council and recognise the huge contributions of so many before me. My most relevant experience is Mum to Indi in Year 7 and Ned who is in Grade 3 at Beaumaris Primary School, but I also draw on my professional skills as Chief Financial Officer for the Stokehouse Restaurant Group.

Steve Pearce

After growing up near London, my wife and I moved firstly to Seddon and then to Beaumaris in late 2004. With our children at Beaumaris North Primary School, the lack of a 7-12 co-ed secondary school was always a inexplicable frustration, which is why our campaign to re-build and re-start this great school was so successful. It's a great honour to be School Council President as the new Beaumaris Secondary College starts its journey, educating local children and supporting local families, as Beauie High and Beaumaris campus did before. The campaign to get to this point was long and hard, but ultimately worth all the effort and all the community engagement, as we now see our kids moving seamlessley from Beaumaris Primary, Beaumaris North, Black Rock, Cheltenham and others to our state-of-the-art learning facility. In my professional life, I work in corporate communications with Peninsula Health, and occasionally commentate on some tennis and soccer. My wife Gita and I live nearby the school with our three children, Lily, who is at Mentone Girls' Secondary College in Year 9, Oliver, who is in Year 7 at BSC, and Amy who will enter Year 7 here next year.
