Senior Unit

Senior Unit Information Session

Quite often parents in the middle and junior part of our school ask about what happens in the senior part of the school. We ran a parent information session last year for the first time and would like to run another this year so that our students and staff can showcase the many great things that happen in the senior part of the school.

We would like to gather information about what time would be most suitable to put on the session so if you would be interested in attending, please indicate your preference via the Google Form:

Pirate Day Games

On Friday the 31st of May the Junior School Council organised a pirate day for prep to Year 6. As part of the pirate day, the House Captains and Play Leaders organised pirate games for the students to play in the hall. At recess, we had the preps to Year 3 playing Ahoy Captain up in the hall and at lunch, we had grades 4-6 playing Dodge The Canon which is the pirate version of dodgeball. All students were extremely happy to join in considering it was cold and wet outside. A big thanks to Mr Chamerski and Ms Meggs for supervising our pirate games in the big ship at the top of the mighty ocean (The hall at the top of the school). Everyone looked amazing in their mighty pirate costumes.  By Sienna SU1

Cat came 32nd and Rose came 40th. Ned and Samson were in under 11 boys. Samson came 14th and missed out by two spots for the next round, and Ned came 7th making it into the State Competition. Great job all of you!   By Rose SU1

Guest Speakers

This week we had Chris Reed an Accountant, come in to SU1 to talk about his job. He talked to us about his interests and he talked to the bank managers to help them with their Earn and Learn job. We asked him questions like if you had a choice of another job, what would it be? and what is it like in your office? Altogether I think everyone learnt something about working with money.

Tom and Jane Niall came in to talk to SU2 and SU3 about their  careers. It was very interesting. They showed us that you can be trained for one job and leave it and start a new business. They made me see that even though everyone else still used processed meats you can go help the organic farmers. I think that it was amazing that they left and made their own path even though they didn’t really have the training so they taught themselves. The students enjoyed listening to their different jobs and had many interesting questions for them!

Also a big thank you to Helen who had a visit to SU3. She talked about her work in psychology and the students had some questions about how to deal with anxiety.

Minecraft Coding

Over the last 7 weeks we have been doing coding. This week we made a little town everyone made their own creations with agents on Minecraft. Our challenge was to code agents to build towers. It was super fun and the examples below show how awesome Minecraft is.  By Sarsha SU1

Catastrophe Writing

Over the past two weeks we have been recounting some of our worst injuries for our writing. Here are some of the terrific examples of writing (not injuries):

Camp Catastrophic by Amber

“Race you to the trampolines!” I yelled at Daisy. Out of the Hall, onto the deck and down the steps. Daisy came running after me. I sprinted to the gate.

It was free time at Phillip Island, Grade 4 camp. We had just about 20 minutes free time before we went to see the Fairy Penguins. Daisy and I loved the trampolines.

I jumped up and opened the gate of the tramps and sprinted to the back of the line. I scrambled to take off my shoes and stood back up. When my turn came, I stepped onto the trampoline and began to jump. I had been working on my front flips at home for ages. These tramps are so springy I might get it right! 1…2…3!

“I did it, I did it, I did it!” Daisy and Mrs Ellis had seen. They were clapping! “Do it again!” yelled Daisy. I began to jump once more. 1…2…3!

OUCH!!! I realised what had happened. I had landed the flip but flown into the springs with the force of the jump. I rush inside and we iced my wrist. The next day I got to go to the doctors with Mrs Ellis.

At least I landed my front flip!

CAR CRASH CATASTROPHE by Matilda

It was just a normal day. We were in the car driving to the zoo. We were driving along the Tullamarine when SMASH! The car was smashed in the boot and we went spinning across the road. A massive truck hit my door and we went spinning backwards and smashed into the barrier. Immediately my little sister Polly and I started to cry.

The car that hit us had hit the petrol tank so there were bad gasses in the air. The doors were all smashed in so when the police and paramedics got there they had to cut open the doors so we could get out. There were these roadside service people who helped us get all of our stuff out. They took us to their bus. We saw a massive hole in the back of our car.

We didn’t go to the zoo but we went to our friend Stephen and Aileen’s house and had ice cream. We slept the night there but I had a terrible sleep because every time I heard a bang I jumped and I also had conjunctivitis.

The next day Mum and Dad bought us massive cupcake packed with chocolate icing but we had to go home on the train because we had no car. The train was very busy and after the weekend was over we had to walk to school every day and we were nearly always late.

I will remember it forever as a traumatic experience.

Broken Bone Catastrophe by Nell

“Dad… DAD!” I screamed as I flew off the handlebars of my bike and crashed into our wood burner. I felt a sickening pain and then everything went black. I woke up in the back of an ambulance on my way to the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.

The lady that was in the back with me told me that I had a nasty cut on my head and that we were going to the hospital to get me all ‘fixed up’. I tried to feel for the cut but the lady stopped me. “Don’t make it worse,” she told me, calmly. She gave me some more anaesthetic and I fell back asleep.

I woke up as we were pulling into the hospital. I was checked in and examined by a nurse. I was taken to my room where I waited for about an hour. After an hour, a surgeon came and told me about the procedure that they were going to perform. I was put under anaesthetic and I couldn’t remember anything else.

To this day I still have the scar and the tale to prove it.

Slice Catastrophe by Aidan

“Clink Clink” as you heard me pull out my Razor scooter that hurt myself with. In front of the scooter were two really sharp points that could cut through skin easily. My uncle and aunt came over to our house in Yarra Glen to have fun and catch up.

We went outside to the back veranda. So as we were talking and I started daydreaming and when I got out of it I flicked up my scooter not knowing my brother was still there… SLICE! It looked like wolverine sliced down his back with his claws. I felt so bad that I went and hugged my uncle to feel better. My brother ended in hospital to 3:00 AM.

When my brother got back from the hospital I asked him if we could see the scar. My brother slowly lifted up his shirt. It was HUGE! It was so wide, too. I said to myself wow I’ve never seen something like I was amazed. You can still see it today.

Earn and Learn update

United States of Chamerski

This week in United States of Chamerski, our pay rise controversy settled down. The government commended our work effort. We also are currently working on a local newspaper, national anthem and car sales for our citizens. Following up in USC, we have been releasing weekly food packs such as the ‘smoothie bundal’, the ‘pizza pack’ and the craze over pineapples! After our second pay day we had our first official third town meeting with our first car sale from our one and only deputy prime minister Nell. Special thank you to all our class members that are helping out to pitch in to write a national anthem! And that’s the weekly report on United States of Chamerski! Thank you and have a good weekend!

Quinnsland Update

In Quinnsland (SU2) we have gotten our first pays and are learning about how to pay rent, save for real estate and having enough money to buy food. There are jobs that earn different pay like Speaker of the House which earns $1,000 while police officers earn $500. There are fines for misbehaviour, charging our computers and noise pollution (i.e. talking). We even have our own bank accounts!  We treat ourselves as a country with our own flag, anthem, and street names like Potato Lane, Chip Avenue and Eight-Seat Street.

New Harrap City

This has been another exciting week in New Harrap City. Citizens received their first pay and have been spending it on many different things. The Police Officers have been busy collecting fines and Miss Harrap has been handing out bonuses. The Shopkeepers are busy putting together a weekly food pack as well. Congratulations to Amelia and Greta who won the anthem competition - their anthem is to the tune of We Will Rock you.
