Green Team News

National Ride2School Day is the perfect opportunity to kick-start new healthy habits and promote the many benefits of active travel.

We encourage all students and their families to leave the car at home and give riding, walking, scooting or skating to school a go on Tuesday 18th May.

All students will have the opportunity to participate in a circuit around the school and enjoy a refreshing smoothie made by Green Team members on our very own smoothie bike.

Remember part way is okay. If you can’t ride the whole way, why not try parking the car a few blocks from school and walk, ride or scoot the rest.

Check out the bicycle network website for tips on bike maintenance and road rules plus some great reasons why continuing to ride through Winter is important.

Get involved with the St Kilda Bike Kitchen to learn how to fix your bike.

Please contact Allison if you are available to assist with making smoothies on the day. allison.shanahan@education.vic.gov.au

Climate Change

Virtual Learning: Climate change and Victoria's future

Students in the Green Team (years 3-6) will be participating in an online workshop on Monday June 7th to learn more about why the Earth’s climate is changing, and what we can do to help.

Developed as part of the Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series, this workshop program provides an opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of climate science and expand their thinking around climate action!

Climate Craftivism – making to make change online workshop

Find out how to make a difference through craftivism - a slow, creative and mindful form of action using arts and crafts as tools for collective empowerment and expression. This event is hosted by the Sustainability team at the City of Port Phillip. Register here.

Nude Food…

Please remember to bring a rubbish free lunch every day. We are currently focusing on the Waste Module as part of the ResourceSmart Schools accreditation. Implementing sustainable practices are part of our vision and helps reduce our ecological footprint.

Year 5/6A enjoyed their prize last week for winning the Nude Food Competition last term. I wonder which class will win this term?

Compost Awareness Week

At SKiPPS we aim to compost all organic waste in compost bins and worm farms. This is then used in our Kitchen Garden Program. By composting our organic waste, we add nutrients and valuable organisms to the soil and reduce landfill waste. Composting is so good for the environment!

Check out  the Compost Revolution for some great discounts (subsidised by the City of Port Phillip) to get your own composting system set up at home and cut your landfill waste to half.
