St. Peter's College House System

In 2012 St. Peter’s College introduced a Vertical Pastoral Care System, which saw the implementation of the St. Peter’s College House System for all students.

As we journey through the 10th year of the College’s House System we can reflect that the ambitions and vision of what was a significant change to the pastoral structure in 2012 have been fully realised. In 2021 we have a flourishing House System where students, staff and parents know that they belong to a community that cares and most critically, knows who they are beyond just a uniform or name.

There is a sense of tradition for parents who have had multiple children come through the House System, starting in year 7 and graduating in year 12. The pride on the faces of House Leaders and Learning Advisors who witness each year the graduating class, most of who started with the House Leader and LA in year 7. Being truly known and connected to your House is one of the most effective protective factors a school can provide for students.  For parents it is essentially your Family’s House, and your primary link with all aspects of your children’s College life.

Before introducing the House System in 2012, the College undertook substantial research. Now ten years on, our experience is testimony to the benefits of a House System including:

  • Increased connectedness and engagement in students to their House and the College
  • Learning Advisors and House Leaders feel they are building long term relationships with students
  • Consistency of contact for parents over the student’s time at the College, especially for ongoing welfare and academic needs of students
  • Reduction in the incidence of bullying and unruly behaviour around congested areas of the campus
  • Increased participation in extra-curricular activities promoting House Spirit because of the sense of belonging to that House
  • Enhanced Student Leadership
  • Positive Peer influence. Relief from peer pressure that can occur amongst same age groups

What could not be foreseen in 2012 was just how beneficial the House System would prove to be in supporting us through the remote learning and lockdowns of 2020 and 2021. Last year the Rosemary Graham Shield was re-imagined as Houses launched virtual challenges to keep us all amused, involved and engaged. Tutor Group became and still remains the best way to start the school day. Routine gives us a sense of purpose and comfort knowing that Learning Advisors, House Leaders and the spirit of our House Charisms, Romero, MacKillop, Assisi, Augustine, Kolbe, Glowrey, Marian and Avila are always with us in faith and learning. This is what unites our College Family.

Therefore, it is important that as we move through this latest lockdown and remote learning phase, we do not focus on the negative but rather celebrate the safety net of the House System, reignite our virtual challenges, engage in the reboot of the Student Wellbeing Page on SPACE, and enjoy each other’s company when we are be face to face. Parents, too must remember that your child’s House Leader and Learning Advisor are there to support you as well, and are only ever an email or call away.

Year 11 leadership Day

We are always so grateful to the House Leaders and Pastoral Care Leader, Mr Brannan for maintaining the urgency, energy and vitality of the Year 11 Student Leadership Day each year.

They continually present exciting and challenging opportunities for our students to grow and develop into young adults ready to seek leadership either by public office such as College Liturgy Captain or more privately among their peers and family.  The training day this year pushed our students to unpack the virtues of leadership and reflect on their own ability to embrace the call of St Peter to be true servant leaders. The joy, sense of fun and energy that I witnessed throughout the day including the sessions on zoom fill me with great hope that 2022 will again see strong, agile and compassionate Student Leaders.  My thanks go to the House Leaders, Ms Selex, Mr Brannan, Ms McKenna, Ms Lloyd-Smith for all of the work that goes into making this day a huge success. Thank you to the year 11 students who turned up in every sense to take on the challenge to be the best version of themselves, today and always.

I wish you all a safe and productive week.

SIS Public Speaking

Thank you to Deep Armaan Singh, Jayden Kottiyali, Rosie Cosentino and Christaron Newstead of Clyde North Campus for being involved in the SIS Public Speaking Competition on Tuesday, 4 May 2021.

These students competed against Public Speakers from other schools in the Southern region. They presented prepared and impromptu speeches for an adjudicator from the Debaters Association of Victoria and were praised for their preparation and speaking style.

"SIS Public Speaking was an entertaining and challenging experience for me. I competed in a fun way and got a lot of enjoyment out of it. I made friends from my school and other schools. Overall I really enjoyed this and would recommend others to try this as well".

- Rosie Cosentino, Yr 7 Student
