News from around the school

New - Grades 1/2 Optomotrist Visit

Optometrist, Mark De Paola, from Graham Hill Optometrists came to visit the Year 1/2s to teach them about eye health.

He explained how we need to care for our eyes and to have our eyes checked when we are in Year 2, or earlier, if there is any problems of not seeing clearly. He told us how to protect our eyes from the harsh sun rays by wearing sunglasses.

The children enjoyed touching contact lenses and asked lots of questions about how our eyes work.

New - Grades 1/2 Dentist Visit

On Monday 7th June, the Year 1/2 children had a visit from the dentist. The children loved seeing Damo the Dinosaur and learning about how to brush their teeth correctly.

The children learnt about “sometimes” foods and “everyday” foods that can impact our teeth.

Some facts that the children have learnt:

  • When you brush your teeth you need to brush the top, the outside and inside of each tooth with round, circluar motions.
  • You need to use floss to get in between your teeth to remove food and plaque.
  • You need to brush you teeth for at least 2 minutes twice a day.
  • You can play your favourite song while you brush your teeth and that will make sure you brush long enough.
  • Did you know that young children have about 20 baby teeth and when you get older you have about 32 teeth?

A huge thank you to Bonnie and Jess from the McLennan Street Dental Clinic for coming in and sharing with us how to care for our teeth.

Updated - Festival of the Sacred - Cancelled

Unfortunately the Festival of the Sacred scheduled for next week has been cancelled! A notification has been sent out to our 5/6 students.

The students have been working very hard on their songs along with certain students chosen for individual parts.

We are still very excited and thought it would be wonderful to perform our songs to the school.

We will be performing for the school on Tuesday 22nd June after lunch. It will begin at 2:30pm.  We will film and send the link out to parents as we do for assemblies.

Recycling Plastic Bread Bags & Bread Bag Tags

St Marys are participating in Wonder Recycling

What's this all about? In Australia, only 18%* of plastic packaging is recycled.

That's why Wonder Recycling Rewards has been created.  This is a fun and easy program for Aussie schools to recycle bread bags & bread tags at school, that might otherwise go to landfill.  Once collected, Wonder is going to turn the plastic into wonderful things like play equipment.

As a registered school, St Mary's will earn rewards points to redeem on new sports equipment from RHSports. PLUS we will go into the draw to WIN one of five exercise circuits made from the recycled plastic we collect.

A collection box is now available in the school office.

Amended - BOOK FAIR - Change Of Date

Change of date - TUESDAY 15th OF JUNE - THE FAIR WILL BE HELD IN THE MARIAN CENTRE.

The Fair will be open for the day from 8.00am.

All books are good quality and are supplied by scholastic. The school receives at least 30% of sales in the form of books for our library.

2020 saw a record breaking $5,333.50 taken and $1866.70 books purchased for the library, which was amazing considering the year it was -no school, Covid. etc....  People came in during the day .  It was fantastic and just amazing.

A flyer will go home with the children next week about some of the books that will be available. There will also be a variety stall with pencils, rubbers, sharpeners etc.

So come along and have a look and support.

Many Thanks,

Maree and Narissa.
