Classroom News

Year Prep/Year 1

In Maths this week in Year Prep/Year 1 we have started looking at Patterns! We have been using a mix of concrete materials and drawing to create our own patterns. It has been great to see the students noticing patterns all around them... in the classroom, outside and on their clothes!

Year 2/3/4

Patterns Everywhere!

The Grade 2 students have been busy identifying and creating lots of different patterns that repeat using colourful blocks, shapes, numbers and beats. They have also been learning all about patterns that grow.

Games From The Past

As part of our Inquiry topic this semester, the students today experienced some of the games that were played many years ago. By the smiles on their faces and the sounds coming from each game, it was evident the students were really enjoying themselves. Some of the games that were played included hopscotch, elastics, marbles, sticks and a variety of card games.

On Tuesday the Year 4/5 and 5/6 students travelled into the city to visit the Immigration Museum and the Koorie Heritage Trust, as part of our Inquiry Unit on migration called 'Everyone Has A Story'.  Students were involved in activities that highlighted the reasons for migration and some of the stories behind them. Groups went through the three main rooms of the Museum, learning about the difficulties and hardships behind some migration stories.

After lunch the students visited the Koorie Heritage Trust, where students saw artefacts and heard stories about Australia pre-colonisation. After visiting the Trust, we were led on a brief tour of Melbourne, which included a walk along the Birrarung (Yarra River).

The markings on the inside of the cloak were like a person's passport, or fingerprint as itr told of their story.

# The five language groups of the Kulin Nation (Woiwurrung, Bunurong, DjaDjaWrung, Taungerong and Wathaurong) all have the same prefix, wurrung, which means 'language''.

Our Excursion

On the 19th of July, the 4/5/6s went to the Immigration Museum. The Immigration Museum was about immigrants and their immigration stories, and it also included Aboriginal stories. One of the things we learnt about was the Dictation Test. The test was part of the White Australia Policy, which was a policy that discriminated against non-white people. If you wanted to come to Australia as an immigrant, you would be asked to do a dictation test. The test includes a paragraph of 50 words, and the person who was taking the test was supposed to write down all 50 words. The dictation test was made to make the people who took it fail. If you failed, you would not be allowed to live in Australia.

On Tuesday the19th of July, we went to the Immigration museum and went on a walk explaining Aboriginal peoples life. The part that I was most interested in was when we were watching a 10 minute long video showing different photos and videos about people moving countries. It was interesting to see how people moved countries and how they coped with being homesick. I was upset when I saw bombings and how many people were affected by it. I learnt how lucky we are as we have food and water and have safety. By Ayisha

On the 19th of July the 4/5/6’s went to an Immigration Museum and we learned lots about immigrants and aboriginals. Our favorite time of the day was when we got to feel and see possum skin cloaks. We learnt that each year on your birthday you add one possum and at the back it has pictures showing different stories. By Caitlin and Isabelle

I liked when Josh, from the Koorie Heritage Trust, took us around and talked about the different things that were in the park like designs in the ground, spears, trees and the sign Birrarung Marr (beside the Yarra River) in the park. It was really fun and I liked it. By Liam

The excursion was really fun and we really liked it. Our favourite part was the park.

My favourite part was when I went on a hammock swing and got swung so high that if I let go I would have flown into space! I felt scared but really excited at the same time and it was a lot of fun when I was on the baby swings with Izaac.  By Amelia
