Science Week

This week is National Science Week which gives us the opportunity to celebrate all things SCIENCE! Grade 5/6 spent today working through some fun STEAM challenges. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics and allows students to take control in the design, construction and presentation process of their challenge project. Today we created a catapult, a flotation device and an 'Eggstronaut'. Students worked in groups to create each of the three challenges in set times. We had lots of fun testing which catapult threw the furthest, which floatation device held the most weight and which 'Eggstronaut' survived their crash landing back to Earth. Check out the awesome photos!

Upcoming Fortnight

In English this fortnight we will be focusing on 'identifying technical and subject vocabulary' and 'interpreting the information displayed in charts, maps, diagrams and graphs' throughout our CRAFT strategy sessions. This learning will also support our information report writing over the next couple of weeks. Students will be encouraged to research and include technical vocabulary linked to their topic and attempt to include supportive text element such as charts and diagrams.

In Mathematics, we are moving on to the topic of Units of Measurement. This topic will involve content around length, area, volume, capacity and mass depending on individual student assessment levels and learning goals. The skills students will take away from this unit will be helpful in understanding and applying knowledge around our wonderful metric system.

Music Information Night - BSE

In preparation for the info night, Bendigo South East College instrumental music teachers, Jenny Gogolin and Warwick Cohen visited Grade 6 students at SGPS this week.  Students had the opportunity to play the flutes and clarinets and did a brilliant job at this. Jenny and Warwick were really impressed with the sounds that Spring Gully students were able to make. There is definitely a lot of potential in our grade 6 cohort to be awesome at instrumental music in year 7!

There are some wonderful videos about the different instruments available and an opportunity to see the actual BSE music teachers at this link: https://www.bimp.org.au/concert-band-1

A music information night is being held at 7pm on Thursday 25th at the BSE Theatre where students can try out instruments and meet the teachers.
