From the Principal

Dear Parents and Carers,

The last two weeks have been epic at Somerville Primary School. We have had our Seniors go to Urban Camp, thank you to the parents for the support, the students for all of their effort while on camp and a huge thank you to the teachers and parent helpers who went to camp. Without the dedicated staff we have at Somerville, camps would not be able to run. Talking with the students, a number of them said the highlight for camp was Pizza at Universal Restaurant on Lygon St. The 3-4 Camp to Philip Island is all planned and ready for week 6. It will be an exciting time for our students. The adventure camp at Phillip Island is an outstanding opportunity for our students.

Just to remind all parents that Cyber Safety is an area we teach at school and support our students with being safe online. If parents want help or advice, they can also reach out to the office of the E-Safety commissioner, please click the link below.

As part of the Department of Education Tutor Learning Initiative, students in Grades 4-6 who have participated in the Booster groups will be asked to complete a survey, the data will not be made public, it is for DET reference. The opt out letter for the survey is available here.

Last night we had our 2023 Foundation Information Evening. We are looking forward to welcoming lots of siblings and many new families into our wonderful school; the true measurement of a school’s worth lies not in its physical environment but in the quality of the relationships that underpin the day-to-day experience for its students.  It is in how well its students are taught and mentored; challenged and nurtured to be kind, thoughtful, compassionate, and creative. We are a small school with a long history, we are in the enviable position of being able to create an intimate environment where every student is known by name, seen, and heard so they have a strong sense of belonging. This is underpinned by a high quality teaching and learning program that is a feature of their time with us. If you missed out on the night and would like a copy of the presentation, please contact the office Somerville.ps@education.vic.gov.au

Last week our Grade 4 students ran their very first whole school Assembly while the 5-6s were on camp. The Grade 4 students did an outstanding job, they worked with the 5-6 leaders the week before to organise the assembly and write their script. I am sure you will agree they all spoke extremely well.

Have a great weekend,
