Rubbish Rebel Waste
Term 3 of Environmental Science
Students have loved beginning our unit on biodiversity so far.
Students in Foundation have been learning about plant parts and what living things need to survive. Grade 1’s and Grade 2’s have been learning about the life cycle of plants and labelling and describing the parts of a plant that help it grow. Grade 3’s have begun exploring fabulous fungi and awaiting the mycelium to be ready for growing our mushrooms. Grade 4 - 6’s have been exploring the process of photosynthesis and finding out how plants make their own food.
National tree planting day
On Friday July 29th our Grade 1 and Grade 4 students teamed up for some planting at school as part of National tree planting day.
We are so grateful to Bunnings Hastings, specifically Debbie the activities organiser, for donating beautiful native plants for us to grow. We have now started our Indigenous bush tucker trail along our running track and we can’t wait to be able to try all of the delicious offerings once these plants have grown.
New SPS waste sorting
With a huge thank you to the Mornington Peninsula Shire we have been able to purchase new waste sorting bins in each classroom and office space. These bins make it easier for our students and staff to easily sort recycling, soft plastics and landfill waste to make sure we are doing our bit to reduce our carbon emissions.
These new waste sorting bins are supported by a Mornington Peninsula Shire Climate Action Grant.
The Senior students have created a video to help you, and the students, know what to put in these new bins. See below:
Saying goodbye to single use coffee cups
Did you know that 1 billion coffee cups are sent to landfill each year in Australia? SPS staff have said goodbye to single use coffee cups and embraced reusable.
Our new reusable coffee cups are supported by a Mornington Peninsula Shire Single Use Plastics Grant.
Walk/ride/scoot to school challenge
We have also started our walk/ride/scoot to school challenge which has been a marine ambassador led program. Information on this has also been made into a video for you, and your students, to watch. See below:
Bread Bag Recycling
Our school is collecting bread bags to send off to Wonder Recycling Rewards. The more we collect the more points we earn for our school. Points = sports equipment. Bring your empty bread bags, no matter the brand to the Enviro Room.
AUGUST is our last month to collect so please bring them in ASAP!
Oral care collection
Our school has signed up for the Terracycle/ Colgate Community Garden challenge. We need your used oral care packaging to earn us votes, the more product packages we collect the more votes we earn, the better our chances of winning a community garden! It’s easy to get involved, simply bring ANY BRAND completed oral care products (image below) and we will collect them and send them away for recycling. Bring them to the Enviro room until October!
