  Reconciliation Week

Last week the grade 6 and grade 3/4 children participated in  Session 6 - Reconciliation Week with Aunty Fay Muir and Sue Lawson on Tuesday July 26.  Aunty Fay Stewart-Muir is an Elder and Traditional Owner of Boon Wurrung Country. A former nurse and teacher, Fay is now recording and putting the Boon Wurrung language into the database for current and future generations. Fay is part of Koorie Court, a language consultant and presents workshops to community members reclaiming their languages. In 2020, in recognition of her extensive contributions, Fay was inducted into both the Victorian Honour Roll of Women and the Victorian Aboriginal Honour Roll.

Sue Lawson writes fiction and nonfiction for children and young adults. A former Colac resident, Sue’s most recent young adult novel, Freedom Ride, was short-listed for the Children’s Book Council Book of the Year Awards, the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards, the Western Australian Premier’s Book Awards and long-listed for the Davitt Awards. Sue and Aunty Fay have been writing together for over five years. Together they have written Nganga, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Word and Phrases and the critically acclaimed Respect, Family and Sharing. These picture books are part of the ‘Our Place’ series which introduces children to elements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. Respect, which has been reprinted four times, was chosen as one of four books to be included in the Victorian Government’s Baby Bundle for first time parents.
