Bienvenue/Selamat Datang

Yet another exciting start to the year for the Languages Department as we welcome two Language Assistants to our Lilydale High School community.

Together with Lilydale West Primary School, we have the privilege to have been selected to host an Indonesian Language Assistant, Iva Laela Syifa for 2017. She will be assisting Sharon Stoyanoff and Mary Rowson for two days per week. The students and teachers have begun to develop a bond with Ibu Iva whose friendly personality shines through all she does and says.

Gabrielle joins us as an extension of our French sister school program. She is a volunteer three days a week in some of our French classes, working particularly with students in Year 9 and VCE.

Iva Laela Syifa

Hi! My name is Iva Laela Syifa and I am from Indonesia. I was born in June 1992 and have been living my 24-year-old life in Bandung, Indonesia with my parents, two sisters and three cats.

That is why, it has been such a leap of faith for me to move across the country to Australia and live a new life by myself. Before coming to Australia, I was an English teacher in a language institution named English First.

The funny thing about me being a teacher is, I had never, ever, ever, ever imagined myself as a teacher before. I was even afraid of kids! I used to hide in my room when my baby cousins came visiting. I wanted to take a different degree but for some reason I had to take Education in university. And it was English Education that I took when I couldn’t even speak English at all! It was crazy, but in time, after I learned and learned a lot about education and pedagogy, I started to become interested in teaching, but not interested enough to actually be a teacher... until my last year of university. At that time, I had to take 6 months student-teacher practicum in one of the government schools in Bandung. I thought I would hate it, but it turned out the opposite! I enjoyed every single minute of teaching! Interacting with students somehow always calmed me, when I came to the class in a bad mood, I was pretty sure to end up in a good mood after the class finished. And I have this feeling of relief, of self-satisfaction, when I see the students can actually learn something from the class when I am the teacher. From that moment, I decided that teaching is what I want to do after I graduate.

So, I was in the beginning of my third year as a teacher when finally the offer to become an Indonesian Language Assistant came. I was beyond excited at that time knowing I will be able to teach my own language to Australians in Australia! I have never imagined myself doing that in a million years! I was so excited I couldn’t sleep for days imagining what it would be like being a teacher in another country. And now, after almost two weeks being involved in a real Victorian school system, I can say that it has been an amazing two weeks! The eagerness of the students to learn and the dedication that the teachers devote are what compels me to keep doing what I can do best. I am so grateful to be given this chance to witness, as well as be a part of, this greatness. I am looking forward to learning more from all of the family of Lilydale High School. May this year be awesome and then some!

Gabrielle Froissart

Hello everybody!

My name is Gabrielle Froissart, I'm 18 years old, and I am a French student. I study the English language at the University Charles de Gaulle, in Lille, and more specifically English and American civilization and literature.

I arrived in Australia a few weeks ago, and I am assisting French teachers in classes as a volunteer at Lilydale High School, so I can help children who need it.

I've always been interested in the English language, because I've always been interested in travelling the world, but more than that, Australia was kind of a dream to me, because my grandparents and my father used to live here, not far from Lilydale.

I am also fond of watching movies and TV series, going to the cinema, hanging out with friends. I am very open to the world, to the different countries and cultures.

I would like my future to be full of travel, discoveries and encounters. Even if I don't know which work I would like to do, I know that it will be linked with English, as an English teacher in France, or a French teacher in another country maybe.

Coming to Australia is the greatest opportunity of my life, and I hope I will come again in the future. While I am here, I would love to see beautiful landscapes, such as the beaches on The Great Ocean Road, or the penguin show at Phillip Island, but most important, I would like to improve my English speaking and to discover as much as I can.

See the light, learn a LANGUAGE............
