Senior School Report

Parent Teacher Night

The Senior School Coordination Team and the teachers of Years 10, 11 and 12 look forward to meeting parents at the Student/Parent/Carer/ Teacher conferences on Thursday, 26 March. The interviews are an important aspect of the three-way partnership between students, parents and teachers to maximise student academic outcomes and welfare.

As well as providing an update on student learning, the interviews help teachers understand your child better and is another avenue for parents, students and teachers to develop and review the shared goals for the student’s learning. Parents are encouraged to ask their child before the interviews if there are any questions they would like asked and / or if there is something they would like their teachers to know. It is also important to talk to your child after the interviews to discuss the recommendations and strategies to improve learning.

VCE and VCAL Attendance

I would like to remind parents and students of the following attendance requirements:

  1. The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) develops and implements the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL).
  2. VCAA policy states that schools are to set minimum class time and attendance rules for the VCE and VCAL. The attendance requirement at Scoresby Secondary College is 95% within a given unit. This expectation ensures that teachers are able to authenticate student knowledge and skill and for students to meet the requirements of their course of study. Only approved absences do not contribute to a student’s absence total.  Medical certificates and approval in writing by the College Principal are acceptable for approving an absence under the College’s policy.
  3. If a student is absent for an assessment task, a medical certificate must be supplied to the Head of Senior School in order for the student to be allowed to sit an alternate assessment task. Students with non-approved absences can only be allowed to complete assessment tasks for satisfactory completion purposes only. Alternate and redemption assessment tasks are scheduled in the Senior School after school on Thursdays.

Year 11 Elevate Study Skills Program

On Tuesday, 25 February the Year 11 VCE students completed the ‘Time Management and Beating Procrastination’ session presented by the study skills organisation Elevate. The students examined and developed their skills in:

  • the four elements of time management
  • determining priorities
  • creating a weekly planner
  • maximising marks in assessments
  • creating study groups
  • avoiding procrastination

Student feedback after the session was extremely positive with 100% of students saying that they would recommend the seminar to friends and that the seminar was time well spent. Each student was also provided with access to online resources to help with their study techniques. Senior School will follow up with the students early Term 2 to ensure students are using their study time and skills more effectively.
