VCAL Excursion

Balloon Football
On Tuesday the 15th of May, the Intermediate VCAL students participated in a morning of Balloon Football with a group of people living with multiple and complex disabilities. This event followed on from three training sessions we had done with Zane McKenzie from Scope Disability Support Services.
The title of the unit of work is ‘See the Person, not the Disability’. Over the course of a few weeks we worked to understand some of the issues faced by people living with disabilities and their carers. Our focus for the last week was communication and establishing trust.
Our role at Balloon Football was to push the wheelchairs for the players. Our students were fantastic with their care, communication and competitiveness. They were able to see for themselves the benefits of activities such as Balloon Football, social interaction, exercise, a sense of achievement and fun!
Our thanks to Zane for organising the morning for us, to Emmanuel Pimentel, also from Scope who managed the session, the parents and carers of the players who kindly allowed us to take over their usual driver roles and mainly to the players (Hannah, Tom, Tristan, Josh, Dave and Matty) who were generous in allowing us to share in their fun.
