Junior News

Junior Excursion
Last week Junior School adventured into the city! We were able to visit the Melbourne Arts Centre and watch a play. We watched the story of 'Dot and the Kangaroo', but the story was told by four actors, and there wasn't much of a set. It was all told through movement and images of animals. Junior School were so well behaved during the entire performance.
We then hopped back on the bus and headed to the Royal Botanic Gardens. Mrs Black lead us on a walk through the gardens where we saw lots of different plants and birds. We stopped and had a run around and ate our lunch before heading back to school.
We were lucky enough to just miss out on the rain!!!
It was an all round fantastic day!!
Maths
Over the last few weeks in Maths we have been learning about place value. We have been discussing ways to make different numbers and we have also had a chance to play with money. We have been learning about the different Australian coins and notes. Junior school has spent lots of time sorting and counting different amounts of money.
We would like to encourage families to have discussions around money, in particular coins. Opportunities to use and count money are a valuable experience for Junior students.
Resilience
We have three new school values: Resilience, Respect, and Excellence.
In Junior school, we have been having weekly sessions on our first value, Resilience.
This week we went out into the yard to think and discuss how to be resilient in different situations around the yard.
Juniors then had the opportunity to film a little role play of them demonstrating resilience out in the playground.
We had a fun time making and watching these videos, and it was great to see all Juniors demonstrating their resilience.
Reading in Junior School
Children need to read every day to improve their reading skills. Students participate in a range of tasks each day designed to improve their reading fluency and accuracy, as well as developing a deeper understanding of the texts they read and the world around them. Each day the students are read to, read to themselves, write about their reading and work with letters, words and sentences. Reading to an adult every day is vital.
We would still love any willing adults to listen to students read for the first 20 minutes each morning, except Wednesdays. If you have a morning you can help please speak to you class teacher. We would love to have you as a part of our literacy program.
Boxes
If you have any little boxes lying around at home, instead of throwing them into the recycling please bring them into the Junior School.
We are hoping to complete some more design activities over this term and would love some small empty boxes.
Thank-you!
