Week 5!
We are almost, technically, halfway through the term! I can't believe how fast time is flying! The students have been busy this week as we move forwards with our core business - Maths, Litearcy and Social Capabilities. It's such a great time of the year to be assessing student growth as I track students development. I can see each student developing more confidence as they progress with reading, writing and maths skills. Don't forget in week 7 (not next week but the week after) we are going to Kew Traffic School. Thanks for returning all your paperwork! Please remember that your child will need a HELMET for this excursion. Parent helpers are more than welcome - YOU ARE NO COST! Please see me if you're interested.
Please check the calendar for important dates!
Saturday 19th May - Working Bee
Wednesday 30th May: Think U Know - Parent Session
Monday 11th June - Queen's birthday
Tuesday 12th June - Pupil Free Day!
Friday 22nd June - School Disco
Maths
We've been busy focussing our maths skills on addition strategies and skills. Students have been counting on from one number to find the total of two numbers. They have been automatically recognising numbers without counting them - subitising! Next week we are focussing on doubles and what numbers make 10! Students who are confident to use the count on strategy when adding will be moving onto Level 3 Mental Maths!

Education Week
Next week is Education week! The theme is 'Celebrating the Arts'. I have emailed our local kinders to see if staff are available to come and visit their past children in their school setting at a time that suits them. I know they are usually so flat chat that it's hard to spare the time so we understand that. I've been keeping the students in the loop when I speak to their kinder teachers and they still get very excited.
Please spread the word about our Transition Program. Our enrolled kinder kids begin their transition next month! Tuesday 5th June. Transitions will be every Tuesday this year from 2.30-3.15pm. If you know of anyone who is expressing interest please direct them to contact us and share your experience so far with them.
Literacy
Students are really coming along with their writing skills. Letter formation is improving each week. We've explored the genre of persuasive writing. This weeka generated some really interesting discussions... check out some of our writing for the argument 'Kids should learn to keep their hands to themselves!'
I believe kids should keep their hands to themselves because...
* "you might have germs on your hands and you will make others sick!"
* "it's not respectful to touch others."
* "it's not safe and you can hurt others."
Positive Behaviour Support - PBS
With the reveal of our new school values, Resepct, Excellence and Resilience, we are working each week on teaching our students about Resilience. Students can tell you that this means to be strong in the brain, keep trying in your learning and not give up. This is a great conversation to have in so many different situations and can lead into conversations you can have with your child at home. I will be doing a happy dance around the classroom when I hear someone say "Are you being strong in your brain?!" I think I can say that at times the language we use does rub off onto our students. In this case, I hope I'm right!
Check out out latest resilience activity on showing resilience in the toilet area of our school.
Digital Technology
Every Tuesday we engage with skills to develop our learners in the digital word. This week we've used the Bee Bots to explore directions and write a code for that direction. The learning intention is to follow and represent a sequence of steps. It was terrific to see the students engaged, supportive and resilient when things didn't quite go the way they expected.
