Vikings

In history this semester, we studied Vikings and as part of this topic I chose to research, design and craft a replica Viking Longship. The research I did was extensive ranging from the striped patterns on the single sail to the different paintjobs on the shields.

I designed the hull of the boat on paper, cut the paper and used as templates to cut the wood to build the hull.  Once the hull was glued together, I soaked long planks in the bath to make them bend.  The Vikings would have done the same thing, soaking oak in rivers.  I glued and nailed a deck on, drilled holes for oars and shields, and hung a sail on with ropes.
